Description For the Dumbledore contest

I've never done a person in pastels before (only birds!), so I'm kind of nervous putting this up but I really want to try and get over my fear of colour! Any tips go RIGHT ahead

He's a wee bit younger and rosier looking than I intended, but I based him (loosely - but I did use a reference photo!) on Richard Harris in the earlier movies before he got too weighed down with everything

Thank you so much - I'm really glad you like it! I'm continuing to try with colour - it takes some practice as I'm discovering!

This is great I just love the intensity of the colour and it really looks like Dumblydore. I don't know how you resist the urge to blend though, as soon as I get a pastel in hand I just make a massive smudgy mess

I know!! Me too - I found an old pastels pad yesterday which has some scenes I'd tried to do in it - at least, I think they were scenes - they were big, blurry, browny coloured smudgy things!! So I tried really hard to resist on this one & it's definitely a better way to use pastels!! And thank you too m'dear

Thank you! It's awfully strange shading with colour - so I'm glad it worked! Like your icon BTW - that's a great movie!

beautiful!!!

my very favourite part is the eyes - I'm amazed at how you drew them, and the eyelashes, and the light reflecting in them.

I really hope to see more of your pastel portraits.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it! I think I'm going to have to do at least one more in pastels - just to see whether this one was a fluke!

Thanks! I think 'Nitwit, blubber, oddment, tweak.' is one of his best quotes - the other being 'Alas....earwax!'

yes! I hope so, maybe it was a trick done with mirrors and the help of his mysterious (twin?) brother, Aberforth

I have my fingers crossed! I've always wondered about Aberforth actually - very mysterious character!

I once read a great fanfiction about Aberforth, written in the style of HP Lovecraft. It was called Aberforth's Folly, I wonder whether it's still out there in Internetland...

Ooh - sounds interesting - I may do a search for it. I'm sure Rowling is one of those authors that *always* has a reason for mentioning something, so I keep getting the feeling that both Aberforth and Regulus Black have *some* part to play...

poor dumblydorr. i <3 your rendition of him, though. and that is my alltime favourite quote EVARRRRRRRR! you did a marvelous job with the pastels, i am completely pants at them and envy anyone with an iota of pastelly talent. w00t.

CanonFodder In reply to toerning [2006-06-02 05:25:34 +0000 UTC]

thank you! It's a brillliant quote isn't it! It just sums up my idea of Dumbledore!

*grin* I haven't used pastels in any way for a while, so I had a mild panic attack when I sprayed fixative on it the first time - it disappeared!!! (Well - not quite, but it looked like it was dissolving before my eyes!!) - lucky it started to reappear as it dried! I still have a bit to learn....

toerning In reply to CanonFodder [2006-06-02 10:40:54 +0000 UTC]

i hate fixative, it's such crap. the stuff's going to rub no matter what you do, up to dipping it in a vat of hairspray. *sigh*

I know! I'm not game to touch it for a bit & even though it's tempting to tip a load of varnish on it I know it won't work! Oh well - at least it's all photographed and kept for posterity!

tripperfunster [2006-06-02 03:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes! He's wonderful!

what? No sock puppets? No Filch feet????

You did a very nice job, brave girl! Keep at it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CanonFodder In reply to tripperfunster [2006-06-02 05:22:29 +0000 UTC]

you faved it! Thank you!

*grin* my poor pastels couldn't have coped with anything other than a plain old Dumbledore...although I do have a nice green that could be good for cheesy Filch feet.....hmmmm.

Ooh - and I tried your technique of using a brush to blend stuff (paint brush though) - it worked really well, gave it a nice base to build on top of!

tripperfunster In reply to CanonFodder [2006-06-02 05:29:16 +0000 UTC]

You blended the pencil or the pastel?

I use paint brushes too. Make -up for the softer larger areas and small wedge type paintbrush for the smaller lines and shadows.

I'm making a Dumbly now too! (although, it occurred to me that it might be rude to 'copy' you. ) I was thinking...hmmm what should I draw, then saw your dumbly and went...of course! The new contest! (although, I was robbed in the odd couple's contest. ROBBED!!! )

Yup, I thought it was time I faved something new, and voila! There was a lovely furball for me!

did you see Liquidscissor's comment on illusions??

CanonFodder In reply to tripperfunster [2006-06-02 05:48:20 +0000 UTC]

Pastels - I never use pencils heavy enough to blend (I'm scared of them - they don't erase properly!). I'm using some of my Grandad's old sign writing paint brushes which have really long bristles - they 'scuffle' things nicely!

You should so do a Dumbly!!! Tch - as if I'd be worried (I think I've done the same, and anyway it can't be copying since, when it comes to HP, it's not like there's an infinite array of choices!). And you were so robbed in the odd couples contest!! I mean, Snape and the Squid, Snape and Dobby, Snape and....well, everyone! If people don't think they're odd couples then I'm very concerned! VERY.

tripperfunster In reply to CanonFodder [2006-06-02 06:06:05 +0000 UTC]

I think Draco and Luna won. Oh well, THEY DON'T KNOW ODD COUPLES IF THEY...UH...ERM...SAW...THEM.............drawn rightinfrontofthem.... teehee

Ya know...if you 'brush' on the pencil (instead of draw directly then smudge) it actually erases quite nicely. In fact, I'm impressed with how well even dark pencil lines erase, like when I do hair.

FEAR NOT YOUNG LASS! Your kneaded eraser is here to rescue you!

CanonFodder In reply to tripperfunster [2006-06-02 06:41:56 +0000 UTC]

Draco and Luna...tch! That's not odd, that's....just....very blonde

Hmmm - I haven't tried brushing on pencil without drawing directly first...but I want to try a whole lot of different new techniques (hence the pastels!), so I may have to give it a go at some stage.

Heh - I can't live without my kneady eraser - it goes everywhere with me (well - almost!) And it's brilliant stress relief! It's MINE all mine...
