The "horse" thing comes from a line in "Mind Over Matters" by Michael J. Nelson (from MST3K). He writes that people keep calling him 'big fella' due to his size. He responds by saying 'I am not names Biggitus Fellaw, not am I a draft horse, so there is no reason to call me 'big fella'."

Maybe it's just me, but ever since she bound her hands it's implicit that their condition has worsen rapidly, and then there was that pannel where Quen made a popping sound by holding it... a pannel showing the final state of her hands would in a way be a relief because up to this point it's left to one's imagination, and nothing's scarier than the unknown. Know what I mean?
I don't know about the disease but if the bones got messed up, maybe just a passing x-ray sheet could do the trick, if you think the actual hands would be too graphic for the rest of the comic's style.

Michael J. Nelson of MST3K fame once wrote that he hates going to social gatherings because strangers keep calling him "Big Fella" due to his height. He thinks you should only use that term for draft horses or guys named Biggatine Fella.

OK, the hand bending the wrong way? That was bad. The ooze coming out of the bandages. That was gross. Rotting meat smell? NOPE!!! All I can say is that I'm happy that she has absolutely no idea how bad it is yet. Hopefully the altered mental status from the fever and her own interesting take on the world will help her not freak out too bad until later. I'm guessing that having her crush/hero there will help.
BTW, I'm loving this. Horrified by the details that I've now got stuck in my head, but loving the story.

Keeping the patient calm and non flipping a shit over "Holy crap my body is literately dying here" is extremely important for any emergency situation.
Rex is lucky that she's too delirious at the moment to fangirl all over him. She'll have plenty of time to do that when she's feeling better XD

I've been reading a lot about "good writing" recently, and I think that the humor is perfect. If you keep it serious 100% of the time, it comes off as melodramatic and soap-opera-y. Everyone finds things funny, especially at inappropriate times. I'd just try to avoid developing a rhythm (which hasn't happened yet, don't worry) of serious-serious-serious-FUNNY [next page] serious-serious-serious-FUNNY. Gets predictable that way, and definitely would break the mood.
