budget....they,d already spent their allotment on E-3s. the 767 proved so efficient and cost-effective that the USAF wanted to kick themselves later on for not buying them instead! it had taken a while for the Japanese National Diet to approve funding for a new AWACS plane,but by that time,the E-3 line had been shut down,but it worked out well for them in the end.

Oh well, its always nice to have more diversity rather than the same types everywhere.
Like when I go to Heathrow, too many A319/20/21's.. so atleast in terms of AWACS theres a few different types flying around.

big mistake for the US forces to give up many planes,including the Douglas Skyraider....tough as a dump-truck,it could laugh at enemy ground fire! lets see any super-jet stay on the scene for 12 hours on a tank of gas and/or come home with half the engine shot out!

The RAF are currently downsizing too. Its ironic as recently they were saying our troops dont have enough air support and now they are downsizing even more.
