The Zodiac-Class Starship was developed by Dr. Caleb Langston in 2349 at the Advanced Starship Design Bureau. Considered to be radical in its development, the Zodiac-Class was Starfleet's experiment in tetryon plasma warp nacelles. This technology was proved to be more advanced than any other in the Federation but like anything experimental, it was plagued with flaws. The flaws were not in the engineering aspect, but rather in the nuclear particle physics that was the basis for this new drive. This form of plasma was able to maintain stability at higher speeds. One of the key flaws was that the dilithium crystals would fracture and ultimately nearly shatter, causing the warp core to almost always overload in the trial runs. To make matter worse, during a trial run, tetryon particles flooded the warp core causing an imbalance in the matter/anti-matter reaction chamber. Dr. Langston spent the next three years working on the complex equations to solve the dilithium problem, however, Admiral Hayes Strickler-the head of the ASDB was becoming impatient. Part of his impatience was that Starfleet began to phase out the Rigel-Class starships. Dr. Langston was left with little option but to utilize the dangerous research from the failed Metaphasic Drive developed by Dr. Anton Yelchin on the Korolev-Class. After multiple setbacks, and failed simulated tests; eventually, Dr. Langston was able to solve the problem of the dilithium factorization thanks to Dr. Yelchin's research. By 2352, the Zodiac-Class was a success and the U.S.S. Zodiac was placed into active service, making it the fastest ship in the armada. This engine modification was later standard to other starships including the Andromeda-Class.

Stardate 2370.01, After the destruction of the Cardassian cruiser Bok-Nor by the Maquis at Deep Space 9, former Starfleet Captain-turned rogue and outlaw Benjamin Maxwell along with Cal Hudson and Kalita manage to hijacked the Rigel-Class U.S.S. Polaris as it was on its way to being decommissioned and mothballed at the Federation Depot on Qualor 2. By 2370.03, Admiral Nechayev authorized the U.S.S. Malinche, U.S.S. Archer, U.S.S. Sherman, and U.S.S. Grant to head up a task force to curve the Maquis's attacks on Federation civilian cargo lines close to the Federation/Cardassian border.

In 2378, After the return of the U.S.S. Voyager, Dr. Caleb Langston attempted to continue the research the fail Quantum Slipstream Drive that was initially developed by Lieutenant's Wesley Crusher & B'Lana Tores. The U.S.S. Astaeus was selected as the testbed. However, during the first short-range test, the U.S.S. Astraeus was destroyed when the quantum phase variances were too great to counteract, and as a result, the hull buckled then collapsed due to excessive thermal damage. All 600 crew where lost, including Dr. Langston. An investigation lead by Starfleet Intelligence later found evidence that the quantum slipstream drive used on the U.S.S. Astaeus was based on the failed Metaphasic Drive developed by Dr. Anton Yelchin.
