I have had plenty of time to play around with old data lately with the weather I have been having. Apart from the lunar eclipse last weekend it feels like years since I have done a image with my telescope. I thought I would reprocess my data from The Pleiades as I wanted to bring out more of the faint wispy nebula. Feedback/suggestions/critique very welcome. Did I do a better job?
Original here

The Pleiades, or Seven Sisters (Messier object 45), is an open star cluster containing middle-aged hot B-type stars located in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters to Earth and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky.

Having played around with dss slightly, I can surely appreciate the amounts of work you guys put into getting these results. Lovely!

Besides, this looks rather detailed, compared to the puny smears of a Pleiades I got with a wideangle landscape lens, lol.

Really really good job on this Greg but IMO think that it has been pushed too hard and from that you have lost your star colours. Also it looks like there is a bit of Coma around the edges of the image, was this because of the Coma Correcter reflections? In any case I cannot really nitpick because I haven't been out imaging for maybe 3 months. I do however have a plan in the pipeline for a massive Eta Carinae mosaic with nearly 30 hours exposure time that I will take on next year.

Cheers,
Nathan

Thanks Nathan Yeah I have to agree with you on reflection with this now. I pushed it too far and went overboard. I think the "coma" is actually bad guiding/polar allignment. The was a very tiny bit of drift in the sub frames. If it was coma I would expect it just around the fringes but if you look hard, it is across the image and all in one direction.
I can not wait for this Eta Carinae project. Sounds great.

well,
i'm back from the coast and my project and i fell amazingly short. out of two weeks i got 50 minutes of data.oh well at least its still rising so i will have a month to get some more data for it. looking forward to seeing some of your works this cold summer.

cheers,
nathan

Bugger. Sorry to hear about your bad run with the weather Nathan. Hope you get more soon. I think I did my Eta Carinae shot in June from memory so you should have plenty of time to get heaps of data on it. I have been a bit telescope starved of late. All the good weather over the last weeks of last year was spent trying to capture widefield images of Comet Lovejoy and since New Years it has either been to cloudy or the moon has been too full. Hopefully get a chance to get the scope out again soon. I want to image the Rosette Nebula next and/or the Witches Head.
Clear skies mate.

i love this cluster of stars i am from Hawaii and am actually going through old books and talking to people that know more about that part of the culture i want to try to shoot the all of the ancient hawaiian constellations so that i can teach people about ancient hawaii

i just found out that this was extremely important to them for navigational purposes the hawaiian name for it is "makali'i" which means "little eye's"

I'm glad you like it One of my favourite parts of the sky as well. Thanks for the info on what it means to the Hawaiian people.

I like this version better. The background looks cleaner/blacker and the nebula really pops out at you now. Overall I think it's a more interesting and beautiful image to look at. Great job.

WOW!!

The amout of detail you've revealed in this shot is unreal!! I had a breif play with Pleiades the other night and was rewarded with a similar idea to this, but with feck all of the detail!

Also, "Did I do a better job?" Greg... Really dude, c'mon.. You've resolved maybe double the detail of the nebulosity and made the stars really shine! A lot of people bitch about diffraction spikes (is that right?) but I love them, it makes everything seem so much more real. I'd much rather that to dots.

Another great shot by the master

oh.....some people like diffraction spikes while others don't. Personally, I like them but they can be over done sometimes.

Awwww shucks. Thanks Ted. Glad you like it. It is certainly a "heavy" reprocess. I was afraid I had over done it. Had to ask.......

Always welcome Greg, you do a great job on your processing and its cool to see that the learning curve carries on. I cant help but wonder if its possible to get more detail out of my shots. *ponders* ill go hunt some guides I think.

Perhaps we could do a file swap one day. I'll send you a stacked but unprocessed image and you send me one of yours and we will both see what we can get out of it?

12GSuper In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-12-19 20:19:33 +0000 UTC]

You know what, I'd really like that.

Lemme know when you fancy it, I'll love to have a go. Even when I resolve the crappy detail I do from an image I get excited!

Pretty busy with the festive season at the moment. I'll let you know when I've got a bit more time on my hands and we will organise something. It should be a good way for us both to learn from each other. You might do something with my data I have not done and vice versa.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

12GSuper In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-12-20 16:21:09 +0000 UTC]

Cool, not a problem Greg

I figure we will likely both end up with something each of us couldn't get. I mean I have to work with the tiniest amount of data to produce an image where you (I assume) have significantly more.

FramedByNature [2011-12-18 14:48:35 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... feel like I might be the only one to say this, but I think I prefer the previous version lol. It just feels more natural. Both are great images, but this one looks more like a great painting to me

CapturingTheNight In reply to FramedByNature [2011-12-19 08:50:54 +0000 UTC]

I ceratinly appreciate your thoughts on this Evan. Thank you I can see what you mean. I was certainly heavy handed with my processing so I might have lost the realism so to speak. I'm happy with the increased nebulosity but I'm not to keen on how that has effected the colour of the stars.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FramedByNature In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-12-21 05:39:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, maybe using a more subtle form of noise removal and dodging the nebulas would work
