Certain forms pop up everywhere and can be sorted into regions... if you are near the woods, bears are big sellers.. Herons or heron like birds are 'the bear of the coast' in that sense. >Pelicans are pretty common tooand sanding< I was done.
The way the grain runs, the head would have snapped off in the carving process so I left the space between the neck and head as a web of wood till the rest was completely roughed out. The body is sanded to contrast the knife cuts on the base. The eye which was 'set' in to the original example, and the random feather cuts were left off in deference to the form which feels almost modern.
