Description I can't tell you how excited I was to capture this set of pics! I came home last night to a new hatchling.

That's cool, but the cooler part: I was finally able to capture the mysterious "egg tooth" on camera!

I had asked about it before, had done many google searches, and nobody that I had found had come up with pics of a crested gecko egg tooth. So I had no idea what I was looking for. I was assuming a small horn-like projection on the upper lip or snout.

I was surprised to discover that the egg tooth was actually a set of egg TEETH. Two perfect little vampire teeth jut out from the baby crested gecko's upper jaw. They are sharp and hard, and look very much like regular teeth except that they project almost straight outward instead of down.

The egg teeth are used by the gecko to break the inside of the egg. I believe that the gecko makes one swift motion with its neck, dragging the egg teeth across the inside of the leathery shell, and it makes one perfect slit that the gecko can slide out of.

It is thought that these teeth (if they are true teeth - it's hard to tell with my minimal magnification where they protrude, from the upper lip or actual gums) are shed with the animal's first shed, which generally happens in the first 24-48 hours of hatching.

Ultimately, this is exciting for me because a) I have caught something on film that I had not seen previously, and b) I have discovered why crested geckos are nocturnal.

It is because they are VAMPIRES.

Cute but bloodsucking! D: How will humanity deal with this threat!
And thanks for sharing, never seen eggteeth before either.

Great job!
I too had been wondering about the egg tooth, I guess this is just another great discovery about these creatures.

I really don't understand how these guys could have made it in the wild. I haven't done much research on New Caledonia, but if it has larger animals or predators, I don't know how these little guys survived.
They're squishy, have big heads, the teeth they have are just hard ridges that can barely do enough damage to draw blood. No venom, no camouflage... (They get brighter and colorful at night!)
It seems like their very existence is to be cute and that's all.

It is believed that in nature, before man started messing with them and crossing this to that, their colors were a lot more subdued, and they blend in a lot better. I mean, half the time I see anoles in Florida they're super-dark brown against a white post and the place is just crawling with them, and they also have almost no bite or other fighting mechanisms...

It's really hard to know with these guys, being such a new discovery. There is still no date set for the life expectancy of the crested gecko, that tells how little we know. We're learning new things about them every day, just like you found out about the teeth.

And awesome little vampires they are. This is so cool, I'm also intrigued by the crests being little nubs instead of the little spikes they develop into. (Also cue job with the watermark, ) Eee, I can't wait for my eggie to get done growing.

This is so exciting! I hear that getting pictures of most animals with egg-teeth is really hard.

Wow, those look pretty gnarly! Kudos for managing to capture this on film... considering how tiny a baby gecko is and how teensy those egg teeth must be. Yay!
