Description Media: Mixed: Solvent transfer, oil, on wood
Dimensions: 11 x 14"
Date of Work: 9/2005

This was inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe. His entire catalog of work informs this piece, as opposed to a single poem or story.

Process: Shown is the digital portion of this image, which was created in Photoshop and Painter. It is a combination of photomanipulation and digital painting.

The digital image is transferred to a maple substrate with solvent, then additional painting and varnishing takes place.

Longing and lost love, distorted reality and the weight of sadness are all themes that speak to me in Poe's work. It is my intent to convey these moods visually within an atmosphere reminiscent of the period in which Poe lived, and of his stories and poetry, some of which can indeed be considered both frightening and bleak.

"From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were--I have not seen
As others saw--I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I lov'd, I lov'd alone.
Then--in my childhood--in the dawn
Of a most stormy life--was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, of the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold--
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by--
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view."

It is spelled "Allan", though this is a very common misspelling. I adore this image. Who is the leading lady? The image is ethereal and haunting. Well done.

You know this is the type of thing that makes me feel pretty. I mean you look at something with a great deal of dramatic flair and inspiration and it makes you feel good, makes you feel like something is going on in you. I like the tone of this one, it's dark and foreboding but still flamboyant. It's like I'm looking at industrial glam you know.

This picture is so beautiful.
It suits Poe well as the background image seems distorted and eerie.

The mood of this piece absolutely captured me. The painting seems to come to life in a motionless way, if that makes any sense at all. It feels as though one can actually involve themselves in the painting but can't speak or touch the character because of a conceptual distance. This particular deviation is lonely and melancholy, beautiful and tragic, and something I'm sure Edgar Allan Poe would really like.

Brilliant work, positively captivating.

its beautiful.
poe has a very dark disturbing quality about his work, but he's just explaining something anyone can experience. i love the intensity of his words and his constant attraction for the macabre and the grotesque, though in a very subtle and sophisticated way ( i hate how macarbre and horror on DA is a category where people submit faces with no eyes or faces with no lips..period. end of creativity!)
this image reflects your interpretation pretty good!

This is absolutely breath-taking piece of work, you have really captured that melancholy feel
that Poe quite often created. The process sounds trickie, but I'll definately check out the
link. Beautiful......
