"Hey, you were on a punishment detail, right?"

"Yeah. For two months."

Shoshanna and Katie were alone in Dr. Gold's waiting room. Katie sat in one of the industrially upholstered chairs next to the tank of serene gliding tropical fish. Shoshanna sat on an ergonomic stool behind the reception desk which hid the prominent pot belly she was otherwise proud to show off while informing you of her due date in nine weeks.

"That had to be hard!"

"It was."

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked you. I hope you're not traumatized."

"No, it's okay."

The two of them usually spoke while Kenny saw Dr. Gold. When alone, they swapped stories of their time at Snake River Prison Complex. Today, as Katie looked at celebrity gossip reports on one of the old tablets in the waiting room she wore a tight dress that especially accented her cleavage. Shoshanna noticed the tattooed "X" atop her right breast, which she recognized as an indicator of time on a punishment detail at Snake River. She used to have one on her left breast, back before having all her identification tattoos removed by her dermatologist, and now husband, Dr. Ben Gold who had been treating Kenny's back acne among other skin conditions. It was almost closing time, but the last scheduled patient had cancelled allowing Kenny to squeeze himself in for an extra session.

"What did they make you do?"

"We turned a mill for like sixteen hours every day."

"Uggh. That's bad. Indoors or out?"

"Indoors. In the annex."

"Oh, I hated that place!"

"It was better than outside, I guess."

"Yeah, that's true. Did they give you a reason? For the punishment, you know?"

"No. Nothing."

"That's so fucked... Oh, sorry!"

Katie smiled.

"No problem."

Shoshanna leaned forward across the desk.

"For me, for us, they said some girl plotted an escape and we didn't report her, so we had to be punished. So they marked an "X" on my boob just like yours there, but on the other one, if that means anything. I had to turn in my bra and shorts, also my clogs. I just had my winter dress to wear, and you know that doesn't cover much."

"Nope."

"They fitted me with a stumble bar. Did you have to wear one?"

"Yeah. I had to wear one a lot. I got used to it."

"What was bad is they attached it to this rigid bar they replaced my shackles with."

"That had to be hard to walk?"

"It really was. And they locked my arms behind me in this wooden stock thing. And then, they shaved the left side of my head and locked a metal mask on my face. Did you you ever have to wear one of those?"

"A few times. Not for too long. It was the "doll" mask."

"Well this one was metal and made to look like a pig face. I think they were trying to be rude and insensitive, don't you think?"

"Yep."

"So that's how I was as they forced me and the others to march around the edge of the complex most of the day. Or we had to stand at attention. They whipped us with those rubber clubs."

"Oh, I hate those things! They sting!"

"Yeah, they sure do. At least they don't leave a mark. I see the girls come in here so Ben can finally start minimizing their scars."

"Like my friend Jessica."

"You know her, too?"

"Yeah, she's been my mentor. Dr. Gold has really done a great job with her. You can barely see the marks now."

"Ben is a master, you know. I'm so glad they didn't use whips like that on us."

"For sure."

"I mean, I was only on the punishment detail for thirty-six days. Some fat dick guard told me they were going to transfer me to Complex 18B. I was really scared then. Of course, I know now that the pervy weirdo who ran that place wouldn't have wanted a girl who looked like me."

"Or me either. I'm glad they closed that place down."

"Hey, when you were turning that mill, were you naked, were you masked?"

"All I had was my skirt. No mask or anything."

"That's good, I guess. How's you're parole going."

"It's going good. No violations."

"Well, once your time's up, if you want to have your marks removed I hope you'll consider Dr. Ben."

Like some prisongirls who had successfully completed their parole-- and had the money to pay for it-- Shoshanna had all of her markings: her ID number on her chest, the year she entered prison on her left thigh, and especially that "X" removed through Dr. Ben's skill. They met at temple-- he came highly recommended. They fell for each other as he meticulously zapped away each line of ink. They married and, when his receptionist moved to Seattle, she took over in his office at Lake Oswego Dermatology and Podiatry Clinic.

Not all ex-prisongirls opted for tattoo removal. Some wore the old markings, once meant to identify and humiliate them, with pride; evidence of their personal strength. Katie hadn't decided whether or not to have hers removed once the time came. Even Shoshanna had contemplated having her ID number and imprisonment year tattooed under her arms.

Kenny entered the waiting room followed by Dr. Gold. Katie put down the tablet and stood to leave. Dr. Gold looked her way.

"Hey, Katie, you'll help Kenny rub this ointment on his back, won't you?"

Katie nodded and looked over at Kenny as he talked to Shoshanna about his next appointment. His gaze alternated between the bulges of her bustline and her belly, both highly accentuated by the tightness of her sweater. Dr. Gold smiled at Shoshanna.

"You ready to go?"

"Yes, I'm famished!"

Dr. Gold nodded at Katie. She grabbed Kenny's arm. He was mumbling about skin infections to Shoshanna as she shut down her desk area. Katie led Kenny out of the office. Shoshanna called to them.

"See you next week, guys."

"We'll be here."

Katie nodded at Shoshanna and walked out the clinic door to the parking lot.
