Description Very late for the World Cup, I know, but I couldn't think of a decent setting, so sorry for that...

I often wondered how Austria must feel like every time he hears "Das Deutschlandlied", considering that the melody of the German national anthem was taken from what was once his when he was still an empire ("Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser"). I imagined it probably made him sad and perhaps a little bit bitter, whereas Hungary would just be a little nostalgic, and Italy would simply go, "Ve! We used to sing that in Austria's house!" or something like that...

I probably should have included Poland (he had a version of the Austrian song as well), but I didn't have any more space...

I just copied the anthem from Wikipedia, so please correct me if I made any errors... or if I shouldn't have done this in the first place. The two lines above are (supposedly) in German, and the ones below are Italian, Hungarian, and Austrian-German respectively.

Btw, that is one of the most beautiful national anthems I've ever heard...

Very interesting, I did now know that the German anthem had its roots in the Austrian one (then again we got our national anthem melody from a British drinking song)
Love the drawings ^ ^

I love the idea but am wondering how Prussia's arm ended up around Germany's shoulder when it goes down at first?
Looks a bit weird.

The idea is lovely though!

Yes! Seeing the anthem in YouTube was what made me discover the same melody in the first place.

chaneljay In reply to SexxiVexxi [2010-09-11 02:01:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah, you mean why I concentrated on the German anthem in this pic than the current Austrian one?

It's because of the melody of the song than anything else. I reckon that Austria (i.e. the character) does love his current national anthem - its just that hearing the German one probably reminds him of the past every now and then. After all, the melody was originally used for his own earlier anthem, when the Habsburgs were still his bosses, right...?

Praise to the german national anthem! Go Deutschland! It sucks Americans don't get too excited about it unless we're involved.

chaneljay In reply to TeenTitansMan [2010-09-11 00:11:33 +0000 UTC]

Really? From what I've been hearing, the Germans are a lot more hesitant to show patriotism, which includes singing their national anthem and waving their flag around (except for events such as football games), because it leads to fears of the past.

TeenTitansMan In reply to chaneljay [2010-09-11 19:05:20 +0000 UTC]

These days many more Americans would rather complain about their country more than wave it's flag with pride. It's sad.

But, with most sports you'll find the patriots

I suppose it comes with sports being the most peaceful way of fighting, per se.

Better that then war.
