There was a challenge in The Robin and Starfire Shrine wherein the creator of the topic wanted to have a fan-art competition, with submissions done using only direct draw in MS Paint or other computer-based paint programs (i.e. no hand-drawn on paper and scan and stuff like that). I'm not sure if oekaki is allowed, and why not if it isn't, but I couldn't help but wonder how well I'll do with that good ol' MS Paint, considering that the last time I used it, I was in 3rd year high school, had never heard of Photoshop yet. So I tried.

And then I realized that I had been so dependent on rough sketches before drawing clean lines that I encountered a lot of difficulties, especially since there's no such thing as layers in MS Paint.

For one thing, the picture above is far, far from what I had in mind. Robin was supposed to be there. They were supposed to be flying! The tower was supposed to be behind them! But nope... since I'm too lazy to clean up after myself, I didn't create the proportional base circles for their faces that Robin's head ended up waaaay smaller than Star's. I finally gave up with the idea altogether.

Next, Star was supposed to be holding her hair while the wind blew it, as she carried a grocery bag in her hand. But then again, no guidelines. I've never been so frustrated in drawing bodies since... well... since a long, long time!

Finally, I ended up giving her a huge jacket, covering her body, with her hands hidden in it. It's cheating, and I'm not really proud of myself for that. So I went out of my way and made sure that it was as detailed as possible to make up for it. (Actually, the jacket Starfire is wearing in this picture is exactly the same as my favorite knitted jacket.)

All in all, it was... fun.
