Description     Named after the flower symbolizing love, the Magnolia Revolution was a week-long internal uprising and reorganization of the political landscape inside the United States sparked in response to brutality at the border. Strikes, mob violence, and rioting forced the resignation of the President after the burning of the Capital building and the collapse of the Republic. The Revolution represented the culmination of the unrest of the previous two decades, colloquially referred to as the American Troubles, and saw the union of Neo-Luddite, Racial, Pro-Migrant, and anti-government sentiment into a spontaneous uprising. The reorganization of the government saw the unprecedented softening of the power of an increasingly authoritarian Federal American government and the expansion of the powers and autonomy of state governments.
The expansion of blue collar and unskilled labor automation led to a growing global trend of unemployment in the 20's and 30's which fed into the rise in civil disobedience and unrest of the era. Small Neo-Luddite organizations sprung up across the industrial heartland of America and, surprisingly, their growth led to an overhaul of Conservative ideology. The growing presence and authority of the Neo-Luddite syndicates and high unemployment in the South led to an emphasis on workers rights in the states. American conservationism changed to incorporate support for labor unions (however still not as a condition of employment) and also emphasized the autonomy of these unions from federal and state governments. Initially peaceful, the great schism in the Neo-Luddite ideology occurred over how best to assert the authority of the syndicates. The vast majority advocated for peaceful reform influenced by the non-violent ideologies of the Civil Rights movement, with a minority advocating violent coercion, these violent elements would become tinged with the rising fringe White-Supremacist and Neo-Confederate ideologies that would become stereotypical of the pre-Revolution South. The peace and debate would be shattered by the Plano Siege. On April 20th, 2025 the American Troubles would officially begin as a group of 35 Neo-Luddite radicals seized control of Toyota headquarters in Plano, Texas, taking over 400 hostages and control of 1/4 of the campus. With the hostages secure inside and makeshift barricades and guards at the doors the siege began. American special forces, national guard, and police surrounded the compound in a 10-day standoff with the radicals. Attempts at negotiation broke down and on May 1st special forces stormed the campus leading to the death of 56 hostages and all 35 radicals. Despite the death of the Neo-Luddite rebels they served as martyrs for the Neo-Luddite cause and the stand against automation. Militia groups threw their support behind the cause and against 'big government' and began working to subvert the Federal government. In order to prevent more attacks Toyota liberalized their automation policy and put automation caps in place to preserve and create jobs. Because of the perceived success of the failed attack, more attacks would occur in the coming decade, with a total of 71 attacks occurring between 2025 and 2041 causing 3,903 deaths.
From the beginning of the 2025 unrest, militia organizations supported the Neo-Luddite cause. Intensifying the unrest and sparking fears of civil war, the newly founded umbrella Federation of Southern of Syndicates and its growing paramilitary arm broke with the Luddite-sponsoring Libertarian party and coordinate a mass uprising across the South in 2030. Seizing territory from Georgia to Louisiana, the rebellion formed and ISIS-like insurgent state under constant bombardment by the American Military and National Guard. Having rejected the militarism of the fringe Luddite groups the majority of the Southern population armed to fight the rebels. This purge of radicals drastically increased the appeal of the Neo-Luddite parties, specifically the Libertarian party, as it removed racist elements from the popular movement. The military conflict between rival Luddite ideology would continue to decimate the South and bring increasing authority to the Federal government under the New Progressive party with a declaration of martial law in states experiencing subversion and the suspension of habeas corpus in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The mass arrests and unlawful detention of civilians and politicians under the vague label of 'subversives' would cause mass public outcry and protests across the country. By 2034 the Rebellion had been reduced to scattered rural towns and was largely defeated. The Luddite War would officially come to an end in late 2035 however the continued implementation of martial law and suspension of habeas corpus stirred unrest in the South. By 2036 the Libertarian party had gained support across the Rust Belt and became and serious contender for political prowess. In the move that would ultimately ensure the Revolution the Progressive party leveraged their control of the government to label the Libertarian party as subversive and unjustly ban it from the American political spectrum due to its affiliation with the Luddite rebellion in the South. Mass protests did nothing to reverse the move and a failed attempted coup by a small conspiracy of generals only strengthened the authoritarian tendencies of the government. Though the Libertarian party sued the government over their ban a council of filibusters stopped the case from reaching trial through legal and extra-judicial acts and threats. Countering the government in the new "Cold Civil War" the Libertarian party advocated peaceful protest and civil disobedience of the same nature as preached by MLK Jr. Beatings, deaths, and arrests ensued.
To make the political situation worse, the intensification of global climate change in the late 2020's and early 30's led to mass internal and external migrations. Within the U.S, migrants flooded out of the South, fleeing the rebellion and the rising sea levels plaguing Florida and the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Nearly two million refugees would be recorded as having fled the South while flooding along the upper Atlantic coast forced evacuation of portions of New York, Boston, and Washington DC. Desertification in the Southwest also played a major role. Rising electricity prices and crippling heat waves caused rolling power outages across Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California. This sparked a wave of emigration with migrants fleeing to Texas, the Midwest, and a minority to Canada swelling their populations. Outside the U.S political chaos in China and instability in India greatly increased the likelihood of famine. The Starvation of 2034 affected Latin America the most with many countries collapsing into violence, unrest, revolution, and civil war. Making things worse, rising sea levels and desertification also aided in the expansion of the crisis. Fleeing the violence and the rolling heat waves of Latin America, caravans of refugees arrived at the border with few seeking asylum while the majority simply needed to pass through on their way to the thawing Canadian oasis. Initially, the fluidity of the border allowed several groups to sneak through. California would become the preferred point of entry due to their liberal immigration policies and resistance to the authority of the Federal government, seeing it as trying to erode their autonomy. An underground rail road of migrant depots formed within the U.S, mostly in California, and would continue to operate even after the National Guard was deployed to militarize the border and cut off the flow of migrants. In a grand media event the population of California worked against the government, refusing to disclose the location of caravans already inside the U.S while also building makeshift supply depots across the state. They gave falsified information to police units in pursuit and even attacked police units to throw them off the caravans. However, in 2037 a fine and jail time were placed on any found to be aiding migrants within the U.S.
The perceived ethno-discrimination caused by the migrant crisis stoked racial tensions within the U.S. Police killings and raids caused riots across the minority majority areas of the country.
By 2041 the nation was primed. On April 14th, 2041 a Vancouver-bound migrant caravan was stopped at the border and denied entry. These "nationless" migrants settled into the crowded refugee camp on the Mexican side of the border. The refusal of the caravan caused waves of protest across the U.S after CNN coverage of the camp highlighted the suffering of the migrants. A particular video of woman mourning the loss of her infant to starvation served to galvanize the nation. Protest movements spread across the country, especially in California, but their scale remained small as was normal for the time. However, the spark that would ignite the United States came in the early evening of April 15th. Climate Refugees from the Los Algodones Refugee camp detonated homemade explosives along the security fence around the camp. Migrants poured out of the hole and, utilizing more explosives and wire cutters, cut holes in the border fence. With streams of migrants pouring into the United States the Arizona National Guard arrived to mend the fence. The flow of refugees did not cease even after they asserted themselves at the breach. Violence broke out and the heavily armed forces of the Arizona National Guard opened fire on the crowd of refugees. With 571 deaths the nation was shocked. Protests across the nation quickly swelled in scale into mass demonstrations, many demanding the overthrow of the government and opening of the border. Overnight, however, the demonstrations devolved into riots with looting and arson corrupting their moral position. Seizing on the unrest, Neo-Luddite syndicates and organizations flooded the streets of the nation to join in the demonstrations. In a historic move to deal with the scale of the unrest, martial law was declared in California and Washington DC meaning more than half the American population was now living in an area devoid of constitutional rights. On April 18th the riots continued to grow in scale. Neo-Luddite syndicates began demanding employment reform with the most radical demanding UBI. Violence in Washington DC escalated further after a police crackdown, during which the city was declared to be in a state of rebellion. The Capital was temporarily moved to Springfield and the President was initially evacuated to a secure location in the Appalachians, however he was later moved to the American embassy in Toronto. By April 19th the military was recalled to deal with a growing insurrection. Fighting began to breakout between police, the national guard, and rioters, however many guardsmen and officers defected to the uprisings and opened arms caches to the revolutionaries. Symbolic strikes and uprisings spread across the U.S until, finally, on April 20th, with portions of the Air force, Navy, and Army declaring themselves for the revolution, the Revolutionaries defeated the garrison at the White House and stormed the building. From the Oval Office the President was declared to have been removed from office while other revolutionaries stormed the Capitol building and symbolically ratified the declaration before the building caught fire and nearly burnt down. From the U.S embassy in Canada the President resigned his office to avoid escalating the situation into civil war. With the Vice President refusing an inauguration, along with the rest of those in line to the Presidency, the position effectively collapsed. By 9:00 PM on April 20th the American First Republic had collapsed with Congress scattered internally and internationally in accordance to contingency plans. In the next week the popular and surviving Libertarian party stepped in to fill vacant government positions and a provisional government was established to rule until elections could be held. The Constitution was rewritten with the 30th amendment setting caps on automation to preserve jobs nationwide and the 31st establishing a Universal Basic Income starting at $10,000 per year. The border was demilitarized and migrants were allowed through under supervision. The American Second Republic was cemented after the government-wide snap elections of November 2041 failed to be effectively resisted or contested.
The Magnolia Revolution would become the first in a series of revolutions between 2041 and 2050 collectively known as the Spring of Nations. Although praised at the time, the Revolution proved to be the last major political event within the United States before its collapse into a period of warlord states in 2094, following rising partisan divisions, economic stagnation due to Neo-Luddite automation caps and production costs, Regionalism, and government incompetence. The terrorist agitation of the Neo-Luddites within the United States ultimately served to strengthen the regional identities of state populations eventually splitting the country.
