Description
A piece I made for a depression art fair at my high school.
Theme: Beacons of Hope for Adolescent Depression
Description I used for the fair:
"At times, the only beacon of hope for someone who has depression is themselves. Depression is not always visible, so it can be up to a person who has it to seek out advice from friends and/or family as well as professional and/or medical help.
I first drew this picture in class when I was feeling low, myself. I had tried to make the person pictured look haggard, so I used a lot of dark pinks and flesh tones to highlight this appearance and make the feeling stand out. It especially shows around the eyes and nose--the person looks like they could have been crying or simply tired.
The next time I got around to finishing it, I turned the lips up in a faint smile and added more color and hope, especially in the eyes (see: the color green in literature). The background is dark blue to symbolize night; the color is darker at the bottom and lighter at the top to signify the dark night breaking into morning. I was not sure if this connection was clear enough, so I added bright yellow light behind the figure."
