This ship was first commissioned by Starfleet in 2339.

The Clovis class was an answer of the requirement for a ship able to match the Klingon's Bird of prey.

The main requirement was for a very maneuverable and lightweight ships but able of good performances, strong offensive capacity and big range.

The Clovis project was the more aggressive design between the contenders. It was one of the first ships designs that abandoned the “circular shape design” to adopt the “Arrow shape design” that it became popular some years later with designs like the Intrepid class or the Sovereign class.

The price to pay was a decrease of the confort and room for the crew respect older “round shape” designs, and weak shield system (mainly the earlier versions).It his time was very controversial design but actually is recognized as advanced design to its time.

The Clovis class was provided with the last technology available in its time in terms of detection and sensor, so it was able to detect some cloaked ship like the early versions of the Bird of prey (but only in limited angles and ranges).

The Clovis class arribes to production in 2346, replacing the Akyazi class from first line. It arrives two years after the Batlle of Narendra, too late to join the war against Klingons. It was in service during a relative peaceful time so probably for this reason it didn't achieve the fame it could got in a more conflictive period.

Even so this the Clovis class were very popular between their officers because during years it proves to be a very capable, fast and handling ship (but maybe not so popular between the crew because the lack of space).

Probably for this reason it was in service during long time being upgraded several times till it was replaced from first line for a even more aggressive design: the Defiant class.

After being retired from the front line the Clovis class still was easy to find in many secondaries roles during lot of years as police/patrol ship, medium range fast personal transport, school ship, etc.
