Flyspur yanked on his tail, pulling and struggling frantically hardly noticing the pain shooting up his spine. But he couldn't pull it loose from between the gears.Energy screamed from the pressure vent as the indicator turned a violent red. Seconds left.
"Quit dallyin', Blue!" Rover shouted as he burst through the doors. "That thing is gonna play super nova!"
Flyspur took in a horrified gasp. He was here to help but there just wasn't time. "Rover! What are you doing?? GET OUT!"
True to character Rover didn't listen. He bounded over to the trapped Jssfloon and gave his tail a stiff tug, pulling it clear and leaving a hunk of purple hair between the two massive gears. "You can grow that back."
The shrieking reached it's peak and there was a groan of tortured machinery and with a hiss, white hot energy began streaming from the seams.
There was no cover, and no time to get to it if there was. Rover shoved Flyspur into the nearest wall and spread his left hand wide, activating the small forcefield. It wasn't big and it wasn't strong. He just hoped it would be enough.
Then the world exploded.

Rover can be massively idiotic at times. He rarely thinks too hard before he does something. Just a 'oh, that needs doin'' and then he does it. But actually the smaller the forcefield is the more condensed it is. If he were to try and shield both of them it may not have been enough. At least that was some of his reasoning.
I suppose the more accurate question would be is there a continuation for the continuation.

Thank you very much! Rover has his faults. He's reckless, has a big mouth and isn't always the brightest guy and always seems to be getting into trouble. But he give his life for his friends in an instant...especially Flyspur.

Hmmm. Well, I think that perhaps Rover would be injured in the explosion...Like, badly burned, or maybe some kind of radiation. The tables would then be turned, with Flyspur being the one to return the favor by then saving Rover's life. Maybe.

Rover is VERY protective of Flyspur. He is often oblivious of danger and does manage to get them into some pretty risky situations. But when it comes down to the moment he would do anything to keep 'Blue' safe. He is his little brother after all.

Yikes! This is horrifying. Good thing that human skin and body can take more then Jssfloon can, but man, can Rover even withstand that??? Looks like some awful burns are already fixin' to set in on his back.
I'm bubbling with questions. How and why are they here? Where is this, and what exactly's happening here? 'The world exploded'? And most of all, what happens next?!?

Because of their cartilageous skeleton Jssfloon can take more blunt force than a human can, as their bones don't break as easily. But a human can certainly survive more then it comes to flesh injuries.
I was wondering if anyone would notice the burns in his coat. He's already getting the brunt of this blast.

Oh yeah, I guess by 'body' I meant how they shut down with blood sleep. It'd be pretty nice to have a cartilaginous skeleton like that! Funny thing (well not really), a young sister in my congregation and my mom are both having problems with either broken bones or cartilage problems, resulting in surgery... The Jssfoon-like skeleton would sure be handy now.
Hmmm, hard to say... Well, It sounds like Flyspur was trying to fix something. It seems they both knew something was going to blow. But I'm not sure what to make of the words "the world exploded". I'd assume it's a machine that's fixin to blow, but maybe is it the planet that's going, and this machine is tied into that somehow?
As far as what happens next, I want to hope that Rover finds himself waking up in a medical bed, in a similar scene to when Flyspur was thawed out after being a pop-sickle, but with things reversed this time. Idk.

Yes, shrapnel would have been very bad for him.
Oh, man, that stinks. We all need the new system so badly....but a Jssfloon skeleton would help in the meantime.
I do suspect they both knew there was going to be an explosion at least some time before, and knew even if things went wrong he would have time to get out, but Flyspur getting stuck changed things.
Let's hope it works out that way. Dr. Cloud is a pretty talented guy, as he loves to remind everybody.

Yeah, I'm glad too. Thankfully it wasn't as big a deal as some knee procedures would be. But you still kinda worry. It's funny cuz the day before the surgery was actually their anniversary.

Rover is a big guy and can take a lot of abuse...and often does. But at this point his size is his one and only defense, as that forcefield is too small for the both of them.
Well, it was going to be a scene from a longer story (a time travel story if that gives you any kind of hint). And I've had this scene nagging in my head for so long it was going to come out sooner or later, whether the rest of the story did or not. All I have of the story is the very next scene.......
