Description Rover squirmed a little under the huge meaty hand that gripped his shoulder, holding him firmly in place.  The spaceport station was busy as usual with aliens of every shape and size bustling this way and that, none of them paying much heed to the stone faced Toads and their young captives.   A Jssfloon spaceport security guard stood inconpicuously to the side, allowing the Toads to deal with the situation their own way but making certain the two boys remained unharmed.  Rover glanced over at Flyspur who was also restrained by a gargantuan hand.  The little Jssfloon hugged himself with all four arms as he stared sullenly at the floor, the spots under his eyes flaming a deep purple.  He looked like a prisoner awaiting his execution.

"Aw, come on, Blue."  Rover chirrped, trying to lift his friend's spirits.  He knew how much Flyspur hated getting in trouble.   "It ain't spot worthy.  Just a little setback."

He would have said more but at that moment a stiff figure appeared out of the crowd and marched purposefully up to them.  Her tail snapped back and forth angrily behind her and her soul spots pulsed under her intense green eyes.   Without even looking at Flyspur she spoke to the blob with legs that was holding him.  "My deepest apologies for the behavior of my son.". She said with a crisp dip of her head that was more anger than remorse.

The chunky flipper shoved Flyspur forward.  "Keep your offspring off our ship."

"Thank you for your mercy.  I assure you it will never happen again."   She glanced down  sharply at Flyspur then turned her back on him and began marching off in the direction she had come.  Flyspur followed, sullenly his head drooping and his tail dragging the ground.

"It wasn't his idea!". Rover called after them.  His mouth was still half open, ready to tell a fantastical tale of how they had been running from some bad guys and had the Toad's cargo hold had been their only escape, but she whirled around and pinned him with a glare that could have melted duranium.

"I know EXACTLY who's idea it was!". With that she turned her tail in him and continued on.

Rover made a face at her retreating back, but sucked his tongue back in when Flyspur glanced back at him before disappearing into the crowd.

He didn't know what the big deal was.  All they wanted to do was hitch a ride.

It wasn't long before another familiar face came into view.  Soorn's yellow eyes met Rover's and the look stopped any protests or excuses in their tracks and left him feeling like slime.   There was frustration there, but it was the sadness that struck Rover in the gut.  Soorn looked him over with a quick glance.  "Are you alright?"

Rover pulled a smile and a carefree shrug.  "Dandy...aside from the interrupted travel plans."

Soorn turned his attention to the Toads.  "Thank you very much for informing me of the situation.  We are both deeply sorry for the inconvenience, aren't we Rover?"

Rover bristled a bit at having to apologize but managed to shrug it off.  "No hard feelings, huh, fellahs?   I mean, a guy's got to get from one place to another some--". Soorn gave him a look that evaporated the sentance in his mouth.  Rover took a deep breath, took his hat off his head and stared at the floor.  How completely humiliating.  "I'm sorry.  We had no right to be on your ship.  Please accept my apology for both of us."

The Toad that held Rover looked suspiciously from Soorn to Rover.  "This is not your offspring."

Soorn's eyebrows dipped and his tail flicked once.  "He most certainly is."

Rover looked up, startled that Soorn hadn't precluded the defiant statement with any polite address.

The Toad seemed skeptical but didn't say another word about it.   "The child requires discipline."

"Thank you.  I am aware.  Is there anything else?"

"A cargo container and it's contents were spoiled.". The Toad rumbled.  "Reimbursement is required."

"We needed somewhere to hide..."  What was meant to be a protest came out as a pitiful plea.

With a weary sigh Soorn pulled his credit disc from his pocket, pressed his thumb to the shimmering plastic and handed it to the largest Toad who tapped in a sum and handed it back to the Jssfloon who just looked tired as he put it away.

The Toad nodded with satisfaction and shoved Rover into Soorn's arms.  "Such offspring become incarcerated adults."  They sneered and lumbered off.

The Jssfloon security stepped up to Soorn, who's shoulders sagged, bracing for even more bad news.  "I regret to inform you that the alien child is banned from this spaceport until his next metamorphosis.  I hope your day is a pleasant one.". With that, he too, turned on his heel and left the two of them standing in the busy terminal.

Rover bit his lip and looked down at his bare feet.  "Soorn...I..."

Soorn shook his head and with two fingers rubbed the ridge of hair that biected his blue face.  "I am very disappointed in you, Rover."  Soorn began walking and Rover miserably kept in step.

"I didn't think that..."

"No, you didn't think.  That was dangerous.  The Toads are easily provoked.  You are fortunate they took pity on your age."

Rover frowned.  "Aw.  I ain't afraid of no overgrown frogs."

"Perhaps you are not.  But what about Flyspur?  You put him in harms way as well."

"I wouldn't have let nothin' happen to him."  Rover insisted, fists clenched defiantly.

"Do you think he will go unpunished for his part in this?"  Soorn never raised his voice but there was an edge to it that Rover was not accustomed.

Rover lowered his head, remembering just how angry Flyspur's mother had been and that last pleading look as his friend followed her into the crowd.  "No."  He said quietly.

Soorn was far from finished as they stepped out of the terminal and into Jssfloon's famous sunlight.  "Not only was it foolhardy, but it was also illegal.  You know stowing away is against the law."

"A stupid law."  Rover mumbled.

"Have you ever seen Slim Danger, Ben Cartwright or Roy Rogers arbitrarily break the law?"

Rover took in a small gasp, his jaw open and his eyes wide, just as shocked as if Soorn had slapped him.

Soorn stopped in his tracks and looked pointedly down at the boy.  "Well?"

Rover's mouth opened and closed for a moment before a tiny 'no' finally escaped his lips.  He looked away as his eyes began to feel wet.  Soorn was right, if any of his heroes had seen him today they would be ashamed.  Some may have even put him in jail.  But somehow Soorn's disappointment in him was even worse.  "I'm sorry."

Soorn's hand was suddenly on his shoulder.  "I know you want to leave.  I know there are so many things out there you want to see...you want to find."  Soorn smiled a little.  "And you will one day.  I know you will."  Soorn gave his shoulder an encouraging squeeze.  "But now is not that time.  You have a lot of growing to do, little traveler, a lot of learning.  I will help you reach the stars...when you're ready."

Rover let out a frustrated sigh.  "I'm ready now."

Soorn just smiled.  "I don't think so.  There is still the matter of the damages  you caused."

"I didn't know you would have to pay for them."

"Correction.  You will have to pay for them."

Rover's eyes widened with foreboding.  "Huh?"

Soorn's smile turned smug.  "You are going to work in the field along with the other workers until all five hundred of those credits are repayed."  He shook a finger from his lower hand at Rover's nose.

Rover's mouth hung open in protest.  "But...but..."  He HATED farming.  It was as boring as watching paint dry.  "You can't..."

Soorn pinned him with a look.  "You owe me that."

Rover sagged.  "Alright."

Soorn pushed Rover's massive cowboy hat down over his eyes.  "There's a fruit cart at the beach.  I'll wager I can beat you there."   And he took off.

Rover shoved his hat back and darted after him.  "Pushin' hat's ain't fair!  'Sides' you couldn't beat me with your hands tied behind my back!"

He really does. He's gentle and kind, but he doesn't let Rover get away with things if he can at all help it.

Oh my goodness, it's a wonder Soorn doesn't have a head full of gray hairs! (Or does the Jssfloons' hair ever gray? ) And him using Rover's Western heroes to support his point (rather than citing Jssfloon characters or historical figures), wow, that was very perceptive of him. (I'm not sure if "perceptive" is quite the perfect word I'm looking for, but it's close, anyway... my vocabulary escapes me at the moment.)

I know, right? Actually they don't, but that's okay.
He knows very well how much Rover looks up to them and quoting anything Jssfloon wouldn't clme close to the same effect.

Now I'm really curious about Soorn. He's got a... well, not really rougher but certainly firmer attitude then other Jssfloon I've seen. And I can't help but wonder how a Third got his own farm. He's a great character, and such a wonderful father-figure for Rover. He seems to know exactly how to handle him.

And I love his design. Clearly Flyspurs species, but also distinct.

chill13 In reply to Klonvon [2015-08-12 21:40:50 +0000 UTC]

He's learned that he has to be on the blunt side when dealing with Rover.  He's spent a lot of time alone on his farm and that also has whittled away at some of that Jssfloon politeness.  He's never rude...but he doesn't always sugar-coat things as much as society might like him to.

Good question.  A Third owning land is almost unheard of.

So very glad you like him!!!  He's a fairly new character to me too, so I thought I would do several of these short stories revolving around him and Rover.

I really like your characters. You've put a lot into this story and it shows.
Poor Rover want's to leave so bad and I don't blame him. Nothing on Jssfloon looks like him at all. It would be hard for a boy to grow up on a strange planet with no other people like yourself.

chill13 In reply to AlexVanArsdale [2015-08-11 15:16:25 +0000 UTC]

Aw!  Thanks!

Yeah, Rover has an intense wanderlust that he just can't shake.  Rover likes the Jssfloon and since he doesn't remember living anywhere different her might have been content living with them if it were not for two things.  That little info drive tells him that a human is supposed to be big, brave and ready for adventure and Jssfloon is a pretty lazy, laid back place.  The other thing is the tourists.  They tell him that the universe is so much bigger than this one tiny, wet planet, with billions of lightyears to explore...and somewhere out there there are people like him.

Rebel-Rider [2015-08-11 04:34:47 +0000 UTC]

I like that Rover has to take responsibility for his actions. Probably a good thing he didn't try stowing away on Klate's ship. Klate probably would have said something along the lines of, "Learn something useful and come back in a few years if you want a job." Soorn most likely would NOT have been pleased if Rover made friends with a pirate, though Klate's got some pretty high standards.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2015-08-11 05:36:31 +0000 UTC]

It's one lesson he has a really hard time learning. And when he DOES learn it he usually forgets it when the next big scheme pops into his head.
LOL! I'm sure Rover would have taken hun up on that. And no, Soorn would not have been happy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2015-08-11 14:30:17 +0000 UTC]

I bet. It's got to be really hard for him, thinking there are others out there like him who he just has to find.
Now I've got a mental image of Klate really upsetting Soorn by giving Rover some kind of practice gun so he can learn to shoot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2015-08-11 14:50:59 +0000 UTC]

That is a big part of him wanting to go.  While he doesn't remember ever having humans around and he's not really deprived in any way he has a rabid curiosity and just needs to know that they are still out there.

Oooohhh.  Well, Rover would love that.  He'd love target practicing with it.  But despite how many guns are shown in Rover's westerns Soorn would have none of it.  And Third or not he would certainly have something to say to Klate about it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2015-08-11 22:34:10 +0000 UTC]

I bet.

I figure he'd love practicing, and Klate wouldn't give some random kid a gun that could actually hurt anyone.
A furious Soorm tramping into the spaceport to give someone Klate's size a piece of his mind would be an amusing picture.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2015-08-11 22:51:11 +0000 UTC]

Soorn is not afraid to drop the usual Jssfloon politeness when it comes to looking after Rover. And he wouldn't care what kind of weapon it was he would certainly give him a piece of his mind. Rover would be protesting all over the place, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2015-08-11 23:05:58 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure Rover would be pretty upset if he lost his gun and Soorn wouldn't be able to use Rover's heroes as an example, then Klate would probably try to defend Rover. That could be quite the argument.

"Aw! Come on, Soorn! How can I ever be a cowboy without a gun?"

"We are not talking about this.". Soorn says as he marches up to Klate and slaps the gun into his huge paw. "I believe this belongs to you. Thank you for your interest in the boy but I am certain you have better things to do with your time and resources than arming children."

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2015-08-11 23:30:23 +0000 UTC]

Klate tries to hand the gun back. "He's not staying here forever. Anyone can see that. The galaxy is a dangerous place and he should know how to defend himself. I'm not saying he has to know how to kill, but there are stun weapons out there."

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2015-08-11 23:45:28 +0000 UTC]

"I have no doubt of that." Soorn draws himself up as tall as he can, which is only about to Klate's chest. "But Jssfloon is not. The only way it will become so is if people begin carrying weapons."

"Soorn, I ain't gonna shoot nobody! You know I wouldn't...."

"Hush!...please."

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2015-08-11 23:57:39 +0000 UTC]

Klate's ears droop. "I wish you were right, that peace would keep you safe." Klate touches a scar on his arm, then looks at Rover's disappointed expression. "Couldn't the boy learn to shoot so he can keep varmints away from the crops or something?"

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2015-08-12 00:13:52 +0000 UTC]

"I imagine peace is a rare commodity in your chosen profession." A flick of his tail indicated just what he thought of that choice. He glanced back at Rover who's green eyes had never been so wide and pleading. "We have humane traps to contain our 'varmints'.". He looks up at Klate. "What is the power on this?"

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2015-08-12 00:21:54 +0000 UTC]

"Unfortunately, it is a rare commodity everywhere," Klate replies. He looks at the pistol. "This is meant for training so it's harmless, not like killing bullets or our stunners." He pulls out a ball about the size of a fist. "When he aims at this, it changes color when it's hit. It makes them useful for space trips when the crew has nothing to do." He winks. "It might keep him out of trouble, at least for a few days."

Soorn sighs. 'I suppose that is unfortunately true. As I was saying...we use traps for our pests. But they have not been terribly effective lately." He taps the switch on the side that is labeled 'chromatic' or 'light stun'. "Is this functional?"

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2015-08-12 00:46:12 +0000 UTC]

"I don't like weapons.". He stated more bluntly than most Jssfloon would dare. "And I don't want to teach Rover to."

Rover blew out a breath of defeat.

"But we do need to keep this prekeets out of the fields."

Rovers head shot up and his eyes widened as Soorn set the device in his hands.

"Thank you!". Rover threw his arms around Soorn in a tight hug and did the same to Klate.

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2015-08-12 15:12:23 +0000 UTC]

Soorn raised a disapproving eyebrow at Klate's assessment of weapons. "In this particular case I agree with you...as this tool will be used for nothing except capturing pests and playing with colors, isnt that right Rover?"

Rover held up a hand. "I swear on Silver's saddle!". He turned the device over and over in his hands as if amazed it was still there. "Now I gotta get me a holster! Can't have a quick draw without somethin' to draw it from. This k I'll call her Bessy! Yeeehaw, I can't wait to get to the field!" He took off toward the beach throwing several more thank yous over his shoulder.

This is great! It's cool to see some of the relationship that developed between Rover and Soorn. How with nothing more then a simple look from him, Rover knows very well to mind. My grandpa was like that. Yet Soorn goes along with and understands the things that are important to him. They seem like they're good buds.
This is very heart warming. Gives more reason to like Soorn as a character.

Although neither of them really admit it Soorn and Rover are as close to father and son as you can get. Which is one reason Rover doesn't like to displease him...that and Soorn can give a whopper of a guilt trip.
