Mess around with the water ratio and play with painting over a spot at different drying stages. Experiment with the paper you use and the paints. I hated watercolors until I started experimenting and seeing what things did when and how. And using actual watercolor paper is important.

How did you come up with your aliens? Looks I mean.

That's a hard question to answer it's different for each of them. Sometimes it starts out with personality of a specific character and their species comes after. Flyspur was that way. Sometimes I will see an animal and think it would be cool to have an alien modeled after that or several animals mashed together. Sometimes I think of a cool idea for a planet and then have to populate it with something. Sometimes I need an alien race to have specific qualities to drive the plot so their features evolve off of that. It just depends.

Ok I see. so then here's a question. I have this character I created (?) (maybe she created herself and pushed her way into my head) back in high school. Her name is Kaydel. She's supposed to be a fish alien. But at the moment she looks to humanesque. I want to change her face some to look less human and a little more alien. How would you go about that? Have you had this problem?

Ah! Yes. It is hard to find that balance betweeen "this is not a human" and 'appealing and relatable'. I had a similar problem when first creating Flyspur's species. If she is a fish-like creature, or at least aquatic, Pintrest to death fish and other aquatic animals and see what features you could add/change to make her feel more alien.

I want her to be "pretty" in a sense. I had just thought of not having a nose because she could breathe through her skin like some toads do. But it's hard to make that look appealing.

It can be helpful to just sketch the character a bunch of different ways. Sometimes it will take several tries before you hit on a design you like.

I do indeed think she's got a lot of hippy in her. But just the nature-loving, peaceful part. Not the 'free love' and drug trip part.
