Description This is an iron chinchilla I cast in spring 2011 at the invitational iron pour at Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama.

Anyone who knows me knows I love metal, and chinchillas. It only seemed suitable that I would have a chinchilla of my own, in metal, to combine my loves.

This is a life size chinchilla sculpture (about the size of an average male chinchilla, which would weight 600 grams), but weighs somewhere between 9-12lbs. Not sure yet, since I haven't taken the time to weigh the final product.

I modeled the positive from plasticine and packed it in a 2 part sand mold. The gating came off the chin and tail/butt, and the pour hole went straight into his tummy.

This is also definitely the most lifelike of my chinchilla sculptures. My previous ones haven't been convincing in one way or another.

Anyway. Just thought I'd share. This is the front view.

Also, who thinks I should smooth and polish up the eyes and maybe ears?

I wouldn't mind seeing it smoothed and polished!
Then again I wouldn't be doing any of the work.

I've been thinking about it. The only issue is that if i didnt like the result, I couldnt go back. I might smooth the eyes though, and probably the ears too, just to bring some more interest and life to it.

Hmm, that's a good point.
I think it's nice as it is as well, so I would go with your gut!
