Description The lower street of Tsumagojuku. This particular part is one of the most sketched areas of Tsumagojuku. I have several sketched postcards of this particular section of Tsumagojuku.


Tsumagojuku is an old post town on the Nakasendo path from Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto. While the Tokaido went along the eastern coast (tokai = eastern sea), the Nakasendo went through the mountains (nakasen = middle of the mountains). Several post towns have been rebuilt as tourist spots, but Tsumagojuku and it's neighboring Magomejuku were two of their first to be preserved. Several of the buildings are over 300 years old.

yeah. I love the crookedness of the streets and the feeling of history, and by that I mean almost as if you are actually in it.

This place is totally like walking in history. In November they have a day where all the citizens dress up in Edo Period costumes for the day. I am so going to try to go.
