Description "The ancient Greek word for element (stoicheion) literally meant "syllable", the basic unit from which a word is formed."---Wikipedia "Classical Element"

Air is the element most life is dependant on. The need for air is less universal than that for water, but for most life humans encounter, it's no less critical. Our perception of air is, however, greatly flawed. We think of a room full of nothing but air as "empty", when in reality it holds something closer in nature to water than a vacuum. Sound, song, speech...without air there is no hearing. When we blame the weather for something, in reality we are blaming air, and its currents and contents. We see the wind as a gentle breeze, and choose to forget that a tornado is nothing but air.

---------------------------------

I know I said Earth was next, but air had more inspiration behind it.

I had a whole lot of fun with this piece, and like just about everything else, I learned a lot from it. The birds were probably the most fun AND the most difficult. It was VERY hard painting feathers that didn't look like they were stiff cardboard. I figured it out, obviously, but...it was very interesting.

Symbolism (such as it is):

-The Colors- The obvious choice for air, white, would have been too boring for a full out picture. I kept white/blue to the costume and went with yellow instead to balance out the set.
-the woman. I always felt that air and water were more feminine. More flexible, quicker to change. Lighter, in a way. Her skin-tone has more to do with what I wanted to practice than any specific thing. I'm OK at lilly-white skin, so it's time to move on to the other variaties of human epidermis.
-The costume: Soft, gentle, silky flowy things, with an Isadore Duncan style scarf. Perfect for air. I also tried to work in the colors we associate with air--pale, pastel things--as well as use it to get some contrasting color.
-The birds--it's air. You have to have birds. I chose canadian geese because...well, they just fit. They have a lot of warm tones, and migratory geese are some of the most "athletic" birds out there. That goose-flight V is pretty iconic, actually. They were actually a lot of fun, and I was suprised at how many colors it took to get realistic shading out of them.
-clouds--thunderheads, representing Air's not-so-peaceful aspects, while still keeping things light, and dare I say, airy.

Thank you. Freedom would be an aspect of air ... can't keep it out, can't contain it, ect. Hence, the pose and attitude.

(Sorry for taking so long to get back to you)

Oh, yes. I took dance training for years, and still miss it. Even got my toe-shoes. Anyway, my dance teacher told me a few stories about Isadora. One was, of course, how she died, but the one I liked best was how she was hired to dance a minor role in a production of...well, I think it was "Midsummer Night's Dream", but I could be wrong--and she either scandalized so many people or danced so very well that she outshone the other dancers, because every time she danced the part they dimmed the stage lights. I genuinely wish I could have seen her dance. That's up there with seeing Sarah Berndhart preform and hearing Caruso sing. Three of the best preformers in history and they all predated technology.

The air conditioner? God, that must be annoying... but it certainly helps to explain the idea behind the color palette.

Glad to hear that you don't mind critique, at least as long as it is meant in a constructive way - I guess. The two concerns were no real concerns, just things that I wanted to point out.
And yes, I know what you mean by vanity thing. Still I think her skin being so dark white eyelashes and eyebrows might look right - personal taste though.

Keep up the good work!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

christwriter In reply to tintenklecks [2007-08-31 17:16:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, any critique that isn't too vague and general for me to figure out what to do is good. Even vague and general can be OK...especially if its "the picture looks flat". The only time I get annoyed is when the critiquer is vague about something that is just too complex for me to isolate whatever problem they saw. Like "You need to work on your anatomy" annoys the living crap out of me, not because I think I don't need to (I know I do) but because I'd like to know the specific spot so I can work on it. But other than that...critique is good all around.

Nice idea for the element air!

Though, since I'm a bad person I have to do a critical comment.

I agree with "minion-for-hire", that the colours speak more of earth or fire to me than of air, but thats a personal-taste-thingy.
The two more important things that I wanted to point out are: (i) Why do people tend to paint the eyebrows and eyelashes in dark colours when the rest of the hair is whitish. (ii) The wingtips of the goose in front seem to be too translucent, since her leg shines through. Was that intended?

Otherwise really nice pic. Hope you are not offended, but I feel that good pictures deserve better comments than just "great", "love your work" and such!

The color was really to balance out the set (which I still need to finish). The four images (air, water, fire, earth) are intended to be viewed together. The air-look colors are, I believe, blue and white. Blue is taken (water) and white...I'm not that good, for one thing (It's not white It's several dozen pale colors jumbled together.) and it wouldn't really stand out. Yellow balanced out the set, and was strong enough to hold up with the other three images. Besides...I live in Texas. The only time I see a cool, refreshing breeze is when I stand directly in front of the air conditioner.

As to your other concerns 1. Because pale eyebrows and eyelashes don't look right. My very blonde mother has to wear mascara, otherwise she looks like she doesn't have eyelashes. So it's a vanity thing. 2. Yes and no. Not quite to that digree (...I'll probably need to go in later and fix that) but I'd wanted a bit of a shadow there, from the sun, and I think I got a bit carried away.

And GOD, no I'm not offended. I've said it before, I'll say it again...I can't SEE things the way you guys do. I once did an entire picture (Seduction. You can look at it too) without realizing I'd painted the woman's hands on backwards. Didn't notice until somebody pointed it out. I see the process, the little bitty work I did...you guys see the whole picture, all at once, and can IMMEDIATELY spot the things I overlook. It's like writers can't edit their own work; artists can't critique themselves effectively. We can't. It's impossible. So no, not offended. I NEED comments like this.

This is a beautiful image, but it doesn't match with the elemental image of Air that I haev in my head.

You said it yourself about the colours being atypical, and I can see how white or pale blue might be a bit boring (and not contrast so well with "water,") but the colours here speak to me more of earth or fire than Air.

Still, the pose is perfect, and the flight of geese look wonderfully iconic, as you said. Bravo!

i really like the feathers and her hair but its pequeliar her skin seems rather blotchy? her hair seems a bit blochy too. but the feathers and the backround are all beautiful. the composition is nice too. i can never get myslelf to do compositions with such intense color schemes but this is beautiful.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

christwriter In reply to SoraPyper [2007-07-10 09:41:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

The blotchyness is because I've never painted darker skin-tones before, and had no idea what the bloody hell I was doing the entire time I did it. And of course, I had to try to get skin texture at the same time, and threw god-awful jpg compression on top of THAT...

Oh, well. Hopefully the next time I try dark skin, it'll come out better.

I'm amazed that there aren't more comments on this beautiful piece. It looks like you definitely put a lot of hard work and thought into it, and it came out wonderfully. I love all the symbolism you described and I never would've thought of it that way unless you'd broken it down like that. I definitely adore your concept here! Keep it up!

Canadian Geese are evil bastards. Seriously. I've seen them mug people.

Other than that, it's a beautiful picture. The only thing I can add is a tip from portrait photography: When a person's foot is in the picture, try to angle it so their sole isn't showing. It doesn't seem to apply to bare feet, but for some reason people find the bottoms of shoes distracting.

But really, beautiful work.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

christwriter In reply to IanWM [2007-07-13 03:11:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

Oh, I know geese are evil. But they're still beautiful birds to paint.

...I'll keep the foot thing in mind. In this case, it would have been anatomically impossible to keep the sole out of view...at least, I think so. In the future, I'll avoid it.
