Description Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

"How long, oh simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge? If you will turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you."

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver, and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.

Proverbs 1: 20-26, 3:13-15

Yes, I let my Christian out on this one (at least, OVERTLY. That's a rant for another day).

I wanted to do a religious picture without using any traditional imagry. Meek women, bible era clothing, the cliche angels, ect. ect. ect. I like all of that, done correctly (Google "Georges de la Tour" and look for "Christ and St. Joseph. That's religious imagry done correctly.) but to me, it's all overdone. We've seen it, we no longer care.

I know it doesn't immediately strike you as a Christian image...but you know, maybe that's a good thing.

I wanted to do this image for a while. The owl thing should be relatively obvious. Dawn, because that's the feeling you get when you finally understand something you've struggled with for a while. The Mucha leanings are obvious. Many layers, a few ajustment layers when the concept changed on me (see Screenprint Journal for more details). Photoshop, Wacom Intros, caffine.

Enjoy.

(P.S. Bible verses are in the ESV translation. Just in case you were interested.)

Yes, she states in proverbs that, " The LORD brought me forth as first of His works."

Someone FINALLY drew a good picture of her!

Really like the alternate way you presented a very unknown (in my experience) biblical image. Hope you do a few more like it.

I really love your approach. (And if more religious imagery were depicted in such a manner, I'd not shun it as much as I do.) The quality of the artwork is incredible and even though I'm not much of a pink fan myself, it works here. Looks fantastic.

I'd love to see more people attempt to render Christian concepts/themes/ideas like this. It's very creative and shows we can do more than reproduce the same imagery over and over and over again. Great job!

Very nice! It's always intrigueing to see Biblical references portrayed in a "non-traditional" way.. makes it feel like less of a "shove-our-faith-into- a-little-tiny-box" lol

Anyway, not a fan of pink.. but it's gorgeous in this!

christwriter In reply to HiddenRelevance [2008-04-01 19:27:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...sorry about all the PINK!!! but I got SUCH good results using that pallate the last time...I might just keep it for skin-tone and start mixing others for backgrounds.

Anyway...that (shove our faith into tiny box) is one reason I did it. There's an idea that Lewis expressed really well, that what we want, what we really want, is God. And the things that give us joy or pleasure on earth do so because they "remind" us on some level, of what we really want. It's like an echo that comes before the words are spoken. And so much of the literature and the pictures around modern Christianity just don't...do it for me. Whatever vision Mainstream Christianity is persuing just isn't mine. This is closer. It's not quite there, but it's not supposed to get there.

*hides from the pink* lol.. it does work though yeah..

Yeah, mine tends to be much more undefinable and just.. more somehow.. so I can definitely relate aye?

I think youve outdone yourself with the satin

A few things are a miss though:

Her hair..what are those shiny streaks supposed to be? Are they just eye candy?
The owl imprints at the bottom of the dress feel like they were rushed a bit..don't get me wrong they're really good though you could have bleded them more thoroughly.

Great painting all in all!!

Yeah, the white stuff is sort of eye-candy, though it's also to...kind of blend the whole thing together. I based the design on a snowy-owl, and they're allover white, so...

I might have to go in and do a little more work on the owl imprints. I wasn't sure how to get those to come out right.

Thanks for the compliments!

Right my little deviantart mudkip...

I don't understand the owl reference. I can see the winglike strokes, I assume they are some sort of symbolic wings in a way? But I do not understand the white strokes on her hair. They seem random to me, I don't know if I 'm just unable to see something others can? But had you not hinted that this would have something to do with owls I wouldn't have seen anything owl-like.

Also, her hand looks like it should be holding something. When you hinted something about an owl I assumed there'd be one in her hand from the way it's positioned. Is there a reason for her hand curving inwards like that?

Lastly, there is a black mark on her left breast that seems like it shouldn't be there.

I do hope you don't get offended by these observations, I love your work, I just don't understand some things about this specific one.
