Description Art time!

This piece completes a set of 3 that I've been working on. Needless to say, this was quite a fun one to work on, too. It changed significantly since the initial sketch. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out, in the end, but I did have to work through a few roadblocks along the process.

At one time, I drew a face on the person there, but I ended up removing it. The dark cowl gives off more of a sense of mystery, I think.

Enjoy.

(reformulating)

I'm saying massive because it's too obvious, not really hard to fix. In 20 minutes it should be done.

The thing is, if everything was perfect in there then it might lose some of the cartoony feeling, I did see some of the other people pointing out mistakes but one above the other, you draw some of the best dragons on dA. You'll get everything right in time. But take your time,

I will print this one day on something bigger than A1 and proudly hang it on my living room wall, even though there is a massive mistake in there... (the dragon's head, if viewed in 3D, it will look deformed. The left side of his mouth....)

It's too awesome anyway.

I went through your Gallery and I think I got all 3, and 1 extra, probably... However, this one is my favorite. ^^ Were we living in a fantasy world, this would be my ultimate goal. ^^

Sorry I can't offer any real critique, though. :/ You're too much above my level lol.

This one is the piece of the set that I'm most proud of, both in concept and technique.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoy this one, and that you had fun going through my gallery.

Why do I feel that I've seen this dragon from you before?

That aside, it a very nice. I've rarely seen Mythology, Technology, Astrology, and Magic mixed like this. Its a very good.

You know my usual comment on your textures.

Wonderful art. And yes, without face is better. The lines crossed in person and that darkness imo makes him a something that looks different than the rest of the piece. And I like it!

Picture is awesome and gorgeous, as usual.

no one has mentioned (that i noticed) being able to see some of the light from the map over the dragon's body. nice touch. i have to say it _does_ look maybe a little *too* much like temeraire, but it's hard not to think about temeraire when you see a dark grey/black dragon with whiskers like that, blue eyes and a necklace/collar. the dragon's pointing finger does also look a bit odd to me, but i can imagine it would be hard to try to draw this scene from the perspective you chose (below and in front).

despite my criticisms, i do like this.

Chromamancer In reply to danperry0 [2012-12-03 12:21:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.
And, no worries. Criticism is always useful.

I wasn't actually thinking of Temeraire at all when I put this piece together, but now that I'm thinking of it, I can definitely see the resemblance, especially with the torc to his necklace. It's sort of interesting how things like that happen sometimes.

The front hand and finger was definitely the toughest part of this piece to plan out, with the perspective. I'll just have to try some more interesting perspectives, to improve with things like that. I'll probably do a little sketching over this, to see if I can find a better way to do things like that... Thanks for pointing it out.

aye, it seems both the dragon and the wizard are interested in stars, in fact despite the mystery sense, people who hide their faces under hoods tend to be nicer!

Still this is an interesting picture with some nice details such as the decor for the dragon lady, and her mage friend. The conversation one can imagine could only be interesting.

Hi there
I haven't been on dA in a while...but man you have improved so much! This is absolutely gorgeous! I especially love the lighting and the planetarium details. Also as per usual, your scalework is wonderful! My only criticism is that the perspective looks a little off. the podium looks right but for the dragon it looks a little too straight on. I hope that makes sense...Looks great regardless

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to Slifer [2012-12-03 12:43:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.

That's quite useful, too. I see what you're talking about... I was going for a circular piece on that podium, but because of the shading there, and the perspective at the top, it comes across as too flat. I'll have to watch out for that sort of thing in the future...
Anyway, I'll do my best to continue learning and improving. There are always more things to practice and learn about, with art!

Chromamancer In reply to bluedrgnMethy [2012-12-03 12:45:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.

I did most of this piece in black and white, actually. Working with grayscale made it easier to adjust the lighting and relative brightness of parts of this picture. After that stage of things was done, the coloring was done partially by hand, and partially through use of gradient maps.
