Description This is my version of a painting by Jean-Baptiste Greuze.

It's oil on canvas, 16x20 inches.

Here's a detail view of the face: [link]

I worked on it from June of 2009 to February 2010. The total time I spent on painting only was about 24 hours, usually in 1.5-hour sessions. In addition to that there was the drawing process and stuff like trying to figure out how to fix the features when they were awry (which took a pretty good chunk of time since it started to look weird ).

My final blog post about it is here:

Beautiful... oils always create such a lovely smoothness. I really need to play with them sometime.

Thank you - yes they are very nice to work with! On canvas especially the blending and such can be very delightful

How did people wear hats like that? They always look like they're just sitting unevenly on a pile of hair ready to fall off.

Yah maybe they are strapped on or there is a clip or something, or they just move very slowly and carefully

Hat pins. -nod-

So I guess now you only have to worry about your piled up hair becoming even a little bit loose enough for the pins to become unfastened over the course of the day and you'll be fine. Avoid wind I guess.

Yeah. Women went through some weird straights for fashion. I suppose they still do. XD

The flesh tones on the face are great, they really make the skin look convincingly smooth.

Thanks! I enjoyed painting on canvas (vs. panel) on this one, I think it was easier for me to blend stuff.

Thanks! Yeah I used to think I would get bored on stuff with a lot of detail but for some reason painting is never tedious for me, that's one reason I keep doing it!

So beautiful! Where did you learn to paint like this?

Oh, thanks! I am self-taught from books and stuff; I do master studies like this partly in order to learn. I picked this one because I really liked it, it seemed possible, and it had a wide range of topics that I wanted to learn more about.

Ohhhh, I was aghast when I saw what painting you'd chosen -- I love this painting, and you did such a lovely job reproducing it!!! Instant fave.

Thanks! I wanna see the original sometime, that would be interesting. I saw other paintings by Greuze in Europe on a trip and they were all really amazing.
