It's actually a direct sequel, so there are a lot of similarities. In spite of that a lot of the aesthetics of the game have been enhanced, the old gym leaders have had their teams and actual gyms altered with three new gym leaders added to the mix and the basic layout of Unova itself has changed greatly.
Did I fail to mention you can catch pre-Gen5 PokΓ©mon in the wild now? 'cause you can catch pre-Gen5 PokΓ©mon in the wild now.

A sequel huh...so would it ruin any story if I bought B and W 2? For the most part they are the same, right? The most recent game I have is Diamond.

Well, I would advise playing Black or White first, since it's a literal continuation of the story from a new protagonist's perspective and might be a bit easier to understand that way.
And yeah, only PokΓ©mon introduced for Black and White were in Black and White originally. You could still migrate PokΓ©mon from Gen4 games if memory serves, but otherwise we had to make due with the new PokΓ©dex, which is actually about 200 strong on its own so it wasn't a complete loss. It gave us more to work with than Red and Blue did, after all.

Aw that stinks. I wasn't that interested in Black and White because I thought the Pokemon didn't look as good as previous generations. XD But I enjoy playing it for the game.
