King Neptune (from “Emily Windsnap”) redo!! Finally put a face to him. This latest edition kickstarted me to start drawing the other characters. FUN FACTS BELOW...
1. I was going to have him all in gold, but didn’t want him mistaken for King Triton. He already behaves a LOT like Triton, the least I could do is make him look different. This is also why I put some clothes on him 😆
2. His tail is described as “if it were studded with diamonds” and shooting “silver rays”. Hence I chose this iridescent white + silver color scheme.
3. One of the most memorable things about this series was the mermen wearing clothes, so why wouldn’t Neptune wear something too? Going further I’d imagine all the mermen working for Neptune (e.g. Archie) would wear a suit like this too.
4. Another reason I colored him mostly white is his Ancient Roman origins. Neptune was originally the Roman god of the sea, so I modeled him off Ancient Roman statues.
5. I’ve decided to base every main merfolk on certain sea animals! Neptune is based on whales: hence his broader frame, flatter round head, & wider mouth. Whales are the largest animal in the sea with very few predators, a fitting animals to represent the king of the merfolk.
