Description (Left to right: Ariel, Melody, Eric, Jake, Mary Penelope, Emily)

After reading the "Emily Windsnap" series, I realized it's a lot like Disney's "The Little Mermaid" . And not just because it's about mermaids.

1) Both Melody and Emily are half human, half mermaid
2)Both turn into mermaids at some point

3) Both have their mermaid heritage kept a secret from them

4) Both are kept away from the water by their overprotective mothers

5)Both discover a secret underwater kingdom of merpeople
6)Both feel like a fish-out-of-water ( pun intended!) amongst their human peers
7)Both bring together the two worlds of land and sea
8) Oh, and they're both 12!

...There's more!

9) Both Neptune and King Triton are loud, tempestuous rulers forbidding contact between humans and merfolk...

10)...because bothΒ  tragically lost their wives

10) Both Jake and Ariel rescue their future spouses from a shipwreck
11) Both Penny and Eric get brain-washed into forgetting about their future spouses (and get their memories back)

Enjoy!

The "Emily Windsnap" series belong to Liz Kessler
"The Little Mermaid" and "The Little Mermaid 2" belong to Disney...and Hans Christian Andersen.

Lol, yeah! Β They DO have a lot of similarities, don't they?

I liked how the parents were "genderbent", though... Β Very often it's the mermaid being hooked by a human man...

I know, right? Probably b/c the legends were told by lonely sailor men XD

And also the Little Mermaid story, probably.Β  That story's kind of the template for merpeople stories it seems.

Yep; that too. This is why I'm now kinda turned off the merpeople genre. Because nearly every story about them is the same! They all copy the "Little Mermaid" story to some extent. There's no variety to them anymore.

It makes me want to write merpeople stories... with variety.

Yeah! Β Especially with their clothes. Β Their default clothing is so boring. Β I mean... Β I'm sure the sea has a ton of different things that can be made into clothes, but somehow they only wear seashell bras? (if anything)

What bothers me even more is that all mermaids look Caucasian, being the legends being from all over the world. Even professional mermaids like Hannah Fraser are nearly all Caucasian.
Β What gives ?

I don't know. Β Just worked out that way I guess? Β It'd be nice to see more diversity though. Β I'm planning on putting it into the mermaid story when I expand it from a short-story

Okay, I read "The Tail of Emily Windsnap", and my brain wants to believe that this is all too elementary for me. Unfortunately, I have a concern about good of a role model Emily is. Please note that due to her popularity, Ariel ranks higher on the outrage meter than Emily can ever hope to get.

I understand that she wanted to get her family back together, and I can forgive her if she was trying to change Neptune's opinions about humans (most people her age don't know that when people's beliefs are confronted with truthful contradicting facts, the pre-existing beliefs win because these people can't bring themselves to admit they were wrong all along), but no matter how selfless the reason is, why did Emily have to BREAK INTO A PRISON!?!? I can't remember where this happened, but I think she learned about the human-merpeople communities about halfway through the story. Couldn't she have made a petition (or something like that) to have her family moved to this community. That is what essentially happened.

I would really like to see some more justification for Emily's break-in. Seriously, Ariel let Ursula make her human despite the fact the she should have realized that Ursula was evil and that Eric was someone she had barely met. I would like a mermaid who doesn't make risky, stupid, and irresponsible decisions. [link]

Once Miss Windsnap finds out her whole existence is ripped off of a (particularly bad) Disney sequel, she is probably going to have a nervous breakdown.

Of course, I could be wrong about that analogy, but if I'm right, it's going to be an incredible knot for future psychologists to untie.

If it's a significantly superior story, I'd imagine it's the other side that would have the greater trouble.
