Great glaze! The crackle of the glaze really makes it look like sea ice. The title of the piece is pretty cool, pun intended. How big is this?

Cool. Is most of your work around that height? I'm having a hard time throwing anything taller than 12" any suggestions?

cl2007 In reply to Neko0Fire [2011-06-10 19:17:44 +0000 UTC]

all my stuff is under 12" so... practice raising while standing up; use more clay?

sorry... I keep going for height but never quite get there

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Neko0Fire In reply to cl2007 [2011-06-14 05:42:12 +0000 UTC]

12"! wow I've gotten to about 10" but I could try to use more clay.
Huh, stand up while pulling? I saw a guy in my class do that but it caused him to step on the peddal and it sent his clay flying.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cl2007 In reply to Neko0Fire [2011-06-14 13:24:33 +0000 UTC]

yes, harder to do (new position- needs practice) and got to be careful- especially with the pedal!

don't forget- it shrinks when dried and fired!

when you refired it, did you repeat the same ramp as your initial ramp?

also, what is the glaze recipe you are using on this one?

I am worried about run off. I just had a slowcool firing (not crystalline) and only ONE glaze ran -- but it was one of the few that I did not put a cookie under. It stuck to the kiln shelf and now I have to grind the remaining glaze off of the huge shelf -- its my base shelf in the kiln -- a big 24 inch circle!!!!
dammit!

re-fire - yes, same ramp.... re-sprayed with helen's crystal (no colorants)

original Helen's Crystal (Snair) 3% copper

worry----> be very worried, see answer in comment on blue bottle detail

soooo cool! I really appreciate all your help with these crystalline glazes. I hope to be able to do a test firing soon! Please help me understand how to do the wadding. I am waiting for your pic and explanation before I begin! Don't want to ruin any kiln shelves!

wow! thanks so much! I've cut and pasted every bit of your info into a google doc with links to your dA pics -- it gives me so much hope to know that a fellow dA artist got Will Schran's recipe and firing ramps translated into actual crystalline glazes on vases!

I've got two nice bisqued vases from last semester that I can use. I'll throw some other nice ones on white claybodies -- are they glazes supposed to be put on porcelain only or just a light claybody? Or can you use dark claybodies also?

I've been putting them on Laguna's B mix 10... porcelain is best though- rough surface can give too many small crystals (I think).

CorazondeDios In reply to cl2007 [2011-01-25 05:12:35 +0000 UTC]

Laguna B-mix 10 -- that clay can be pretty ornery for me! I'll try it anyway. I have a bunch of clay. I'll also try it on some Nara porcelain. That stuff is awesome! So easy to throw! Fires snow white. Really nice!

I'll post pics of my efforts once I get this project off the ground! Thanks a million for all your help!

thanks for all the comments

I do all my work at school (where all my notes on glazes are btw... won't open back up till the 10th)

Until then I can give you the following for crystal glazes... [link]
I have only used the Helen's crystal (Snair) so far and experiment is the key

The gradient that the glaze creates is amazing. The pot is so cool blue that it practically releases cool energy. If one was to drink tea from it, he would be visually tricked into thinking that its icy cold. Nothing else to say - WOW!

Really nice glaze.
I think it would look wonderful on the top of a spherical form with just a very small opening, a nearly closed form.

Gorgeus! I love the crackle glaze you used!

Is it still called a crackle glaze? I've never worked with porcelain, so I know nothing about it heh...

But this is a really amazing piece. I love how much it reminds me of th ocean.
