Description Back in the days of steam fan trips on the Q and 29 cent gasoline...

The Q and the 20th Century Railroad Club ran trips so often that I'd ride every second or third and chase the rest. There's my 1963 Rambler Classic 770 on the shoulder of US 34 and there goes 2-8-2 #4960 steaming on by... paralleled by a string of other cars doing the same thing I am.

Were there any news reporters out there?

nope... back in the 60's there was a trip like this almost every month for a couple of years so it really wasn't anything special back then!

Boy, you don't see telegraph wiring or poles in that good of condition anymore (except in rare cases).

Classic shot.

On my last trip down to Bloomington on I-55 I just noticed that the UP just finished sawing down all the poles along the old GM&O . Kinda sad to see that history gone.

Yeah. Most of the poles around here down the KP line are already gone, were gone before I came up around here, but there's a few hangin' around, mostly as mp markers and other miscellaneous stuff.

Of all the old BNSF and K&O lines, they're still there, and BNSF still uses a few, but all the K&O stuff is in such disrepair.

IC got rid of all their poles (some still remain.)

Yeah, so did UP. There's a few scattered around up in this area, but most serve as milepost indicators, and the rest are just still there for some reason.

I recently did some shooting down by Wichita, KS where BNSF still has some wire-line signalled terrority on the Arkansas City and Emporia subs still in use, and it sees quite a bit of traffic actually, being that the line comes into contact with BNSF's transcon in two different places.

Niiiice Rambler. Truly a classic

O, rite, I'm getting off the subject >_>

One thing I always love about these shots of the classic steam engines is that massive billowing cloud of smoke. I -love- the Dash 9's, but they just don't have the charm of one of the old steamers.

you know I kinda miss that car...

I've got another shot that a few folks will love of that car and this engine... I've been holding off on scanning it... I snicker a little every time I pass it up.

The open doors on the pack wagon look like a lot of fun. Too bad I've never seen anything like this on any german steam excursion.

When I got home from riding one of those, my parents made me strip off my clothes in the garage. Imagine 12 to 15 hours of riding with you head in open air filled with coal smoke and steam. It was a lot of fun!

Awesome shot, Chris. Brings back memories of when I was a kid, riding along with Dad when we'd chase Southern 4501 or F-units on excursions in East Tennessee.
