Description I often wonder if this engine ever ran again.... the tender is empty and the stack is covered to keep out the weather.

The NorthWestern Steel & Wire Company was not a Common Carrier so they were exempt from some of the rules governing what was safe to operate. For a long time they ran engines that were sold to them as scrap but still had flue time left. Number 28 was ex-GTW 8328 and was one of several on the property at the time we visited. I think that's a 1956 Buick and a Corvair in the background... also antiques today.

I just bought 9 of those gondolas in the background! And 3 in the P&LE roadname. Two are in the funky Penn Central teal and one in tuscan red.

No, my airbrush hasn't touched them yet. Most likely one day when I can have a proper paint booth.

Judging by this, it's not in too bad of shape really.

Yeah... I always wondered how long they kept them around. They really only used one at a time.

Nice! There's a Camelback at the Strasburg railroad in PA that will be renovated to run again. It has a rather small boiler so it will only be able to pull about 3 or 4 passenger cars.

camelbacks were the oddest looking beasts... an SP cab-forward made more sense to me than the camelbacks where the fireman was out in the cold separated from the engineer.

Yeah I agree. Camelbacks were also dangerous; boiler explosions pretty much meant sure death for the engineer, whereas the original locomotive design had some survivors during such an event.

I'm always a sucker for seeing a steamer on the sidelines. Deadlines, and cold steamers being moved always make me sad. Its like watching an exicution line. So seeing a steamer who is given a reprive, however short it is, always makes me smile.
