I'd say real. 600mm focal length and f4 makes for a narrow DOF and nicely blurred background. Works well to isolate the subject.

That is a very good point. The only reason I wondered was the sharp outline of the bird against the background... but Claude doesn't seem like the sort of person to cheat on his photos

It's the sort of background you can have with a canon 600mm and subject in the 6 meters range.
