Nice.
I know General Denis Earp, former Chief of the SAAF, who was shot down by a MiG 15 in his Mustang and spent time as a PoW in North Korea. No fun, that, I understand. Here's a bit more on him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Ea… He is really an old fashioned "officer and gentleman".

The postmaster in the small town I grew up in flew Mustangs in WW2 and was called back to fly Mustangs in the ground support role in Korea. His name was Fred Blatt. I don't remember his rank. I do remember he did not like the P 51 in a ground support role because of the radiator in the belly of the plane. In his later years he built and flew Experimental Aircraft, right up until he passed on.

Cool. My best friend in high school's dad was in the same squadron in Korea as Earp, but he was ground crew and he also said the planes were very vulnerable to ground fire. This Mr Blatt sounds like an interesting man. Lots of flyers are!

Yeah. We talked about my relatives in the Gulag and horror stories they told and he said it was much like that. Not something he was happy to talk about.
