Description
On the 1st of August 1943 the USAAF attacked the oil refineries at Ploesti in Romania.The reason for the attack was to cut off oil supplies to the Axis powers to try and shorten the war.
The attack very costly as air defences were greater than expected and the bombers had to carry extra fuel for the long flight from Libya.
The aircraft shown are a Consolidated B-24 of the 376th Bomb Group, a German Bf 110 night fighter, a Romanian IAR.80, and a Bulgarian Bf 109.

It gives one a different look at the air war. Did you invent this format? It's very clever, because it makes the air war look like a ground battle, this side vs. that side, especially when there's a coalition involved.Β

Thank you!Β I was inspired in part by the WW2 Battle of Britain maps that the plotters used to track the Luftwaffe.
I will definitely do more now.

That's interesting. I see what you mean. But it's kinda cool. I hope it catches on, because you know how one gets used to ground warfare maps, say, El Alamein, and you can see on this side it's the Italians and the Germans, and they are here, and there are minefields etc, and the Eighth Army is here, and these are the Poles and the Brits and the Aussies etc, and the same with naval maps, you get a sort of eagle-eye view. I find this does the same for me for aerial warfare, which is a big help, because of course the planes are constantly moving.
