Description The First World War was largely a ground and sea war, but as it continued air power began to increase in importance.

By June 1917 several Jastas of the Luftstreitkrafte had banded together to form the ‘Flying Circus’ (JG1) which moved around from airfield to airfield for the rest of the war.

In June 1917 the Allied offensive in Flanders began and was extensively harried by JG1.  But the technological battle in the air was swinging slightly to the Allies.

The aircraft shown are Albatros D.Vs of Jasta 4, 6, 10, and 11 being opposed by SPAD S.VIIs of the Aeronautique Militaire squadrons 26, 73, and 103.
