Description Created for Magic: The Gathering Online and was an image update from an older card. The art director had said I handled odd or difficult scenes well and there might be one I'd be interested in so I said send over the brief. It was definitely one of the strangest briefs I've ever received and I went through numerous concepts before arriving here. This is a portion of what I received, "This is a trick shot of a melting candle that magically contains an entire landscape, deliberately playing with the difference in scale...the device it's mounted in...is built like an orrery, a model of the solar system, with candles in place of planets...the wax has melted into a magical depiction of a landscape with a paradoxical sense of scale. The edges of the melted candle look like a mountain range; the pool of melted wax looks like a lake."
I ended up reversing the arrangement in the brief where the candle melts into the miniature world instead of the world being in the candle but the gist holds true, the image works and the AD liked the image. Hope you do too.

No doubt that was definitely and odd or difficult scene description, it was both really specific in some regards and super open-ended in so many others. That's a recipe for an illustration where you could end up trying many ideas before you finally hit what the client is looking for. Not to mention that the idea itself requires specifics that probably aren't already well-tread grounds for any artist. Nonetheless, you did a really good job with it in the end, though personally, it reads more like a world turning into a giant candle than a regular size candle turning into a miniature world.

On a more general note it's cool that you're doing illustrations for Magic, that's something I've wanted to do ever since I first played. Of course, back when I was a little kid starting out, the art direction was relatively all over the place, as opposed to the far more consistent and coherent direction it eventually settled into. So back then it was easier to picture someday doing a Magic illustration since they could be practically any style, but by the time I was even close to good enough, Magic had settled into a specific look that almost certainly wouldn't have need for me.

Β I love the way you gradually blur out the foreground and background. It work on both levels. Somehow it makes it feel both like it could fit on a table top and yet is also be impossibly vast.Β it really stirs the imaginationΒ well done.
