It's not about how well you did in the 'box office' for so many 'classic' movies.Β  Tons of Disney animated classics 'bombed' in the box office.Β  It's about marketing and what people are use to and seen enough to believe they were successful and thus become a classic (like the movie It's a Wonderful Life that bombed in the box office and was super cheap to air on tv thus why it was shown often around Christmas time and thus gaining its fanbase and status).

Also how the box office worked back then was much different from now.Β  Β Movies back then wasn't expected to make a big profit for the studies in the short run unlike today.Β  Since TV was still newish and had only three channels plus no VCR/DVD the only way a person was able to see a movie agian was when it returned to the theaters.Β  Thus movies were shown multiple times as expected by creators and in the long run made money for the studios from those repeat viewings.

Fantasia 'bombed' but was shown multiple times (making a huge impact during the 60's during a culture change which the movie fit right into the non traditional artistic movie changing culture).
