Two questions:
How is this held together?
and
How is it raised from the backing?

Hi!Β So glad to answer interested questions.
I use a PVA glue that is made for bookbinders. It's white, like Elmers, but dries clear and flexible and is archival, etc.Β It comes in thick and regular, and I get mine from Hollanders (www.hollanders.com/ ), who sell bookbinding supplies and all kinds of paper.Β I like the thick, because just a small dab grips quick, but allows re-positioning.Β The regular is easier to spread if I need to cover an area.
I use a couple kinds of support.Β Where it won't show, I use pieces of foam core board.Β It comes in an acid-free version, in different thicknesses.Β For places where the support might show, I use paper that matches the color of the pieces being supported, folded into a square-sided tube.Β My friendΒ Pen-umbra uses balsa wood.Β You should go look at her work, it's great!

Thank you so much! I can't wait to try my hand at paper cutting.

I hope you enjoy it a lot.Β One more thing - it's a lot easier to cut with an Exacto-type knife than with scissors.Β And be sure to change the blade as soon as it starts to get dull.Β It really makes a difference!

It is always a delight to see the fluid motion you create in all of your work.

I can't get enough of these river garden pieces. This is stunning - I can't get over the fact that with a few artfully cut and placed pieces of paper, I can see underwater, to the roots, and feel the river eddying around the trunk.
It leads me to inquire: is this, or any of your other river garden pieces, for sale?

Ooh - thank you VERY much! I apologize for not replying right away; we've been away for the T holiday.
I do sell pieces. But so far, I've just sold through local galleries or at local shows. Shipping worries me. These things are very sturdy. (I dropped one once; the frame bent, the glass shattered, but the paper sculpture wasn't damaged a bit except for a small scratch from the glass that was easy to smooth out.) But they're very fragile in another way - if anything were to snag on one of those little ripples, it could bend or tear loose. I'm scared to ship glass. But I could probably fix up some kind of inner box to send a piece unframed.
The river pieces, though - they are for sale, but they're all being saved up for a show next September. A friend who does Japanese woodblock prints will be exhibiting with me, on a Rivers theme. ([link] ) I've only finished five or six pieces so far. I'd be very happy to sell you one of the river gardens, or make one to specs just for you, but I need to hang onto them all for another six months. I don't work very fast, and I'm afraid of not having enough to fill my share of the space.
You can email me at cloutierjm at gmail.com if you'd like to talk it over some more.
Even if you decide you don't want to fuss with buying one, I'm really thrilled that you like them that much! Thanks!
Jane

I'm sorry for my late reply in turn!
Ah, that all makes sense. I do think that at this point I'm going to back out - beyond everything else, a look at my finances made it clear that commissions should be the the last thing on my list - but let me repeat that I absolutely love these.
