Description So first I totally forgot to draw the necklace I gave to Kalea and her wearing it. So in the story I explain why it's not there since she wears it all the time. Second I love how this turned out.

Now as always, help is needed for drawing The Depths and there is the Patreon. Here are the journals below:

Island Otter and Male

Training

For Kalea, after Nicholas gave her that necklace, the sea otter was the happiest she’d ever been. The female never took it off unless it was for sleep and whatnot. At times when she was by herself, she’d hold the chain by her fingers, letting the sunlight dance on the surfaces of the necklace. Just looking at it with a happy smile. And it didn’t take long for others to notice what she was wearing. Kalea had no problem with saying the fosky had given this to her. “Awwww, that’s so nice of him,” Leilani churred in the native language her friend was more fluent in. “He’s so sweet.”

“I know!” Kalea squealed in the same time. “I love him for it!”

“Wait… love?”

“Yeah… I…” the purple eyed sea otter blushed but smiled deeply. “I… I really like him… even love him…” It was the first time Kalea had said that to anyone else.

Leilani felt torn. On one hand, she was happy for her best friend but on the other, knew the fosky would have to leave the island. He wasn’t staying forever. It was the same for the green eyed sea otter, only it was with the captain Nicholas worked for. Lani herself had fallen in love as well. That was why she spent as much time as she could with the otter captain and talked with him about this. But the male told her not to worry as he had something in mind. There were some things he had to work out first which was why for now he kept didn’t tell Leilani anything about his idea just to be safe. But she didn’t have any idea if Nicholas was like the captain. If he left, she was afraid that Kalea would be heartbroken. But the second otter smiled to cover her thoughts up. “Well, I’m happy you have with him,” she said. “I think you two would be perfect together.”

“You really think so?” the first otter asked, happy. “Thank you! Maybe he’ll stay here if the Sea Goddess herself wills it!”

Nothing more was said on that. The fosky himself in the meantime was wondering around the island trying to find Kalea. The long-haired male had no luck and found himself at a clearing. He was about to head in a different direction when the guy saw some of the native male otters practicing their combat skills with the spears and knives the tribe here used. Despite how there wasn’t an invading enemy, it was still a part of their culture. Nicholas just watched them, seeing the way they moved. “Good, aren’t they?” went a voice.

The guy had been so busy watching them, he didn’t realize that Leilani had joined him and jumped. “Oh my god!” the fosky yelped, then realized it was her. “Leilani! You scared me!”

“Sorry,” she replied with a smile.

The male got over his fright. “Yes, they really are. I was just trying to find Kalea and then I saw them practicing.” Nicholas looked to them. “I’ve always been interested in seeing people practicing fighting with weapons and their fists. I wish I could take up those weapons and join in. But I don’t want to intrude in an outsider when I’m not a tribe member.”

“Really?” Leilani asked. “Have you even handled a spear or knife before?”

“I’ve had experience with knives, but probably not the kind you otters used in terms of what they’re made of. And I’ve used weapons similar in how to handle so the spear shouldn’t be any different. I’ve taken martial arts as I’ve always liked to do so. I still keep up with some of the techniques and with weapons as part of my workout and keeping my stamina up.”

The sea otter was surprised. Sure the guy had muscles but from what she had seen, Nicholas didn’t seem like the fighting type. “Well… maybe at least I can help,” she said.

“Oh?”

“Let me grab some things and then let’s meet here again in a bit.” The fosky nodded, wondering what Leilani had in mind.

They met again when it came time. The guy saw that Leilani had returned with two spears, one for each, and a few knives to use. “If you really want to try, then let’s test and see if you can handle these,” she said.

“This ought to be interesting,” Nicholas said. “It seems the chieftain’s daughter can fight.”

“I have to know,” Leilani replied. “I’m next to rule after my father.”

She then handed him one of the knives. The fosky noticed there was a tiny bit of weight to the weapon. The blade was made of some kind of bone or sharp material that curved slightly up. A leather grip was wrapped around the handle for a grip. “It’s light,” he said. The guy took a ready pose with the blade in a reverse grip in his right paw. The male began to move, pretending he was striking at enemies, evening switching the dagger to his left paw. Leilani was even more surprised as the guy clearly knew what he was doing. Nicholas then stopped suddenly. “Hand me another,” he said.

The otter tossed him and the guy was able to catch the handle in his right paw. Now the fosky was duel wielding the knives easily. Nicholas even chained in punches and kicks. The technique he was using was different than what the otter warriors used but it was still nice to watch. Nicholas finished with a shot and down on one knee. “Wow, that was something!” Leilani stated with a grin.

The guy rose up and bowed. “Thanks,” he replied. Nicholas looked at the knife in his right paw. “Although how sharp are these things?”

“They can cut fur and flesh even if they’re not metal.”

“Hmmm, I wonder…” The guy then looked to a nearby tree. “I’ve got one more thing I want to try with them if that’s alright. You might want to stand back.”

The otter did so and the guy threw the knife in his right paw at the tree, angling it like a throwing a disk. The blade flew and it went into the wood with a thunk sound. “Wow, it actually work,” the fosky commented. “That might come in handy.” He turned to Leilani. “Now let’s see these spears.”

Looking showed while the staff part was strong, there was a little flexibility to it. The head had some kind of long bone or tooth to act as the head of the weapon. Testing it on wood showed it was sharp enough to go through a person. “It seems balanced and simple,” Nicholas said, testing the item with throwing it. Picking it up, he then began to twirl and spin the spear around in his paws. It was like a staff from what he was use to only there was a sharp end. It was no problem for the fosky who began to strike at it and practice. Leilani just watched him and saw the guy finish with a strike to the ground. Like last time, the long-haired male also chained in kicks with his technique. Then she grabbed the other spear in her paws. “Let’s see how good you really are,” the otter said.

“I’m ready,” Nicholas replied and took a ready stance. The result Leilani found was not only did her spear get knocked quickly out of her paw, but the head of his was pointed at her. The otter was at a loss of words.

“Told you I’ve had experience,” the guy said with a grin.

“I… I don’t have anything to say,” she mumbled.

“I thought you said you knew how to fight.”

“Well… to be fair I haven’t been practicing as much as I should,” Leilani admitted sheepishly. “My sister on the other hand does it a lot.”

“What sister?”

“You know, Malana.”

Now Nicholas really was surprised, or rather shocked. “Malana and you are sisters?!” he asked.

“Yeah she… she tends to not mention it.” The female got a sad look on her face.

“Wow… I had no idea… It explains why you two fight.” This changed some things for certain.

“Malana… she and I really compete and tries to prove she’s better,” the otter said. “It wasn’t always like this tough. But as she got older I think she’s gotten jealous of me and how father tends to pay more attention to me than her. It seems ever since my mother died it’s been that way.”

“Oh,” Nicholas said softly. “I have wondered why Chieftain Ahomana was always by himself without someone next to him to help him rule. What was she like?”

Leilani and him sat down and the guy was told. Malina was her mother’s name and the tribe hadn’t forgotten her. From acting as a mid-wife and babysitting the growing, curious pups on the beach, to assisting in the creation of floral clothes and accoutrements, she acted like a mother to all the others. Ahomana and her made a perfect team in ruling over the otters of their tribe, and she prided herself on being seen and heard every day, giving a little of herself when she could. Then this extended when she got pregnant with first Leilani and then Malana. She loved both her daughters and instilled her beliefs into them, praising them from the very beginning. She was the keystone to the happiness this family had.

Unfortunately, Malina was also foolhardy and fearless, a trait her eldest daughter had. One morning, she joined other stronger divers to depths at the bottom of the sea to prepare net traps. These had been an invention of hers and they could pull across the sand and catch massive amounts of fish and other food for the tribe. But things went wrong when Malina became tangled in some of the netting. Before anyone could reach her in time to cut her free, the otter had drowned. They had brought her body up and there was grief and sadness. This had been when Leilani was eight and Malana was seven. Even though ten years had passed, Malina was still missed every day. “And that’s when things began to change for me and Malana,” Leilani then said. “Father started paying more attention to me than her. My sister started trying to prove herself. That has led us to fighting a lot. I wish things could go back the way they were…”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Nicholas whispered. “Truly, I am…” The two were silent for a bit. “But even so… I still think your mother lives on. In here.” He pointed to where his heart was. “I’m sure she’s out there and watching both you and Malana. And I’m sure she’s proud of both of you. Along with your father being proud of both of you two.”

“I don’t think Malana feels that way…”

“I’m sure you’re right,” Nicholas said. “But still, thank you for telling me this.”

The two then figured that since the fosky could handle the weapons, he could join the other males if it was okay. Leilani talked with Ahomana and after seeing the fosky could indeed handle himself, the chieftain allowed it. News of this spread all over the island like wildfire. Kalea, Malana, and the rest of the crew heard this as well. “You fight with them?” Kalea asked Nicholas. It was a few days later and she and the rest were at the same area where the fosky had seen the male otters practice. The sea otter had been in such a hurry to watch this today she had forgotten to put on the necklace from him today.

“Yeah, just watch,” he said to her. She looked worried. The fosky took the spear he was going to sue and twirled it around in his paws.

“Shall we dance?” he asked to his partner.

“Come,” he replied and they came in. Kalea watched in amazement and glowing pride as the fosky showed he knew what he was doing. Despite not being able to flip the long haired male had excellent reflexes. And clearly could hold his own. The sea otter watched the long-haired male fight against the male otter he was sparring and despite the second guy’s efforts, in the end, the fosky managed to get the his opponent onto the ground. The guy rose up, only to find the tip of Nicholas’s spear at his throat. The two were breathing hard.

“That’s the end of that,” the long haired male said.

“Amazing!” Kalea stated to him while those watching clapped but Malana. The first female had relief on her face with a smile to match. “I thought… I thought you get hurt…”

“Kalea, I would never…” the male said softly, reaching out and touching her left side of the face with his right paw after putting his spear down. His smile matched hers. “I promise…”

Her paw met his and their foreheads and noses were just inches apart, staring deep into the other’s eyes and the blush was on their cheeks. But the moment was interrupted by Remy who congratulated the fosky on a job well done. But Malana saw all this and was beginning to grow hateful towards Nicholas for corrupting, or at least in the second otter’s eyes towards Kalea. It was really jealousy that someone else seemed so natural with fighting when she should be the strongest and most natural. And all of this plus Malana’s feelings of being treating second by her father, and how Kalea and her sister seemed to be getting the best of the guys and hos she was stuck with Remy was making something boil inside Malana that was about to hit the breaking point. And this would cause a thing to happen that would help for the better in the long run.

Originally I was going to have the fight but this chapter was getting way too long. So it'll happen next time. And the info of Leilani and Malana's mother was found in the Depths Comic as well as other sources. And next time Kalea will be drawn with that necklace.
