Vance lived in a big city. His life did not seem particularly unusual. Then one day he found himself surrounded by human sized insects. They explained to him that he was their long lost queen. It was time for him to return home and rule as queen of their bug colony. Vance objected to this but the insects insisted. He quickly discovered he really did not have much choice in the matter.

The insects carried him high into the air, much higher than the highest skyscraper. Vance wondered why no one saw him being carried away by giant insects. Then he remembered that in his city people rarely bothered to look up. The insects carried him through a large cloud and into a giant hive kept hidden from those below.

On the ground again, even if it was floating ground, Vance was able to explore the place. More insects surrounded him with faces showing a mixture of admiration and curiosity. Then one of the insects who brought him there left and returned a short time later with a shell filled with a liquid that looked like honey. Vance peered down at the liquid not really sure what to do with it.

The insects explained to him that this was part of his coronation. Vance drank the liquid wondering if he might regret it later. The transformation took place in a matter of seconds. His body became female. At the same time antenna grew out of her head and wings grew out of her back. Her servants dressed her in the finest clothing they had available.

Just as suddenly as it had begun the coronation was over. Valerie understood that she was indeed the queen of the bug colony. She started giving her subjects orders and they followed them to the best of their ability. She wondered if she was just a figurehead or if she could truly make decisions that matter. Either way, the insects did their best to please her and Queen Valerie would do her best to please the colony.
