Description I've been working on her for a few days now, messing with different types of neck, leg, foots, and head shapes, tail lengths, coloration, patterns. I'm satisfied with everything that is drawn.... but I feel like something's missing.........

One of the things I could add is a mane..... but length would be a question. I want to give her some way besides the final few feet of her tail and her ears to express her emotions but I don't know what to add. Help please?

EDIT I've decided to give her a horse like mane, with out a forelock. Its normally cropped short, but if left to grow it goes to the other length shown. Pretty sure that's as long as it will get for the species if I make a species out of her. But who knows.

I do love creature concept design, and I see you've feeling like there might be something missing from this one in particular? I'll try to drum up a few suggestions and all that and see if I can be helpful XD

For a start, your grasp on anatomy is really nice, the creature is convincing, and like everything in nature, she each part of her anatomy flows on to the next. That's an important thing to remember, that most everything in nature flows,

Unless you're looking at something like this:
[link]
Which is a golbin shark or something sweet jegus i don't even...
But anyway that's beside the point - she looks like she could be real and that's very good.

One thing my tutors advised me to do whenever I was stuck on a creature, was to really think out exactly how that creature lives it's life. How it came to be, or evolved, where it lives, what it hunts or eats, how it finds that or tracks that.
I don't know how much of this sort of thinking you've done already, but it sure does have a massive impact on every aspect of a creature's design - from the number of digits in it's feet to the patterns and colors of it's fur, scales, whatever. Every part of an animal has a purpose, and has evolved as a result of where that animal lives and what it has to adapt to - so thinking through that stuff might help you if you're looking for something more to add.

And if you've heard this all before then I'm sorry for rambling!
(quick idea: maybe if you draw in an environment around the creature, she'll have more of a real/grounded sense for you? I had a quick peek at your Gallery and I saw lots of beautiful equine fellows but I didn't notice any other work relating to this - regarding a habitat? Sorry if there was something and I missed it D: )

You mentioned also that you were looking at some method of displaying emotion? For that, I'd recommend reading up on how a whole lot of real animals communicate with each other. There is a huge amount of inspiration out there, and always something completely mind-boggling to capture your attention on youtube!
Like this weird thing: [link]

Though that really just makes me laugh and if I was the female bird I think I'd fear for my life.

But yeah. I think she's a beautiful concept for a creature, and you should certainly keep working on her until you're happy. The form is graceful, and you've shown a good deal of skill in portraying a realistic and convincing anatomy. I hope my suggestions prove helpful in some way e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Your links didn't quite come through but I can get what your going at.

She is actually a different turn from the other creatures I have uploaded into my gallery (though only a fraction of my art not HARPG gets on DA), though her movements are some what like the Yasul run animations I have done [link] & [link] . She has actually become quite a developed creature in my mind, how she moves, acts, communicates with other races. Her race is omnivorous, and they are quite sentient. Horses were a big influence on her, the coat pattern and head show this, but she was also influenced by draconic creatures. Her race might get a little magic from this influence, I'm still undecided on that fact.

But I really appreciate your advice, since I try my darnedest to be realistic its good to hear I've accomplished what I've set out to do. Its also good to hear that since I'm entirely self-taught in my art. So once again thank you. Also if you could repost those links I would be much obliged.

This is sweet you should totally make her a species. Maybe you could add fur to the tip of her tail unless she is able to climb trees and its prehensile. I really like her I would so get one if you did make a whole species.

OMFG
If you make this like a sort of breed of creature, I would sooooo get one.

Maybe show her teeth? She could growl and stuff. Pointy teeth!

Gorgeous design for a creature ^^ I really like teh tail and paws. I could see a short mane along the neck, going from before teh ears to like halfway down the neck

as far as the emotion goes, maybe add a patch above her eyes that changes colours like a chamelions, natural still but different enough for it to be expressive, or mabey some sort of frill like a lizards under her chin. and i would make the mane short and tangled like a foals. by the way, beautiful creature and extrodinary design

Cogaidh In reply to FragileButts [2012-02-02 03:17:35 +0000 UTC]

I can see short spines in the mane that can raise and lower the hair to show different emotions.

FragileButts In reply to Cogaidh [2012-02-02 03:18:32 +0000 UTC]

that would be cool, like super stiff hair on a wolf.

TechnoJara [2012-02-02 03:10:43 +0000 UTC]

personally, i think you should give her a mane. it should be short or medium length and run down her back and on her legs(like a lion!)
besides that, i really like this design... it's very unique, and it actually looks proportional and functional

Cogaidh In reply to TechnoJara [2012-02-02 03:16:52 +0000 UTC]

I like the lion like mane idea if I make this a species for males to have, females would probably have a more horse like mane.

And thanks ^-^ I like making things that look like they could have actually lived.
