Description "He was one of those who think that science will eventually turn the position. Enjolras was a chief, Combeferre was a guide. One would have liked to fight under the one and to march behind the other. It is not that Combeferre was not capable of fighting, he did not refuse a hand-to-hand combat with the obstacle, and to attack it by main force and explosively; but it suited him better to bring the human race into accord with its destiny gradually, by means of education, the inculcation of axioms, the promulgation of positive laws; and, between two lights, his preference was rather for illumination than for conflagration. A conflagration can create an aurora, no doubt, but why not await the dawn? A volcano illuminates, but daybreak furnishes a still better illumination. Possibly, Combeferre preferred the whiteness of the beautiful to the blaze of the sublime." - Victor Hugo

A few cocktails, a half-bot of Moet et Chandon, and a midnight session with the sketchpad...and Combeferre acquires a pout and sultry look. I shall emply more sobriety in future Amis portraits.

Love Combeferre. He and Javert are the best.

He is a great character - a glorious nerd. I'd have to nominate Enjolras and Courfeyrac as my favourites, but Combeferre doesn't come too far behind (one of the stories I hope to write one day is a crack fic where he works with Champollion to solve a mystery involving early Egyptology, given as Hugo mentions he was already deciphering hyroglyphics at what is a very early date for him to be doing so).

Javert is a great character as well...I haven't drawn him yet, but will one day get around to doing a confrontation with Enjolras pic.

He is such an amazing dork. He, along with Enjolras and Javert, are the best.

I can't wait to see that picture! It'll be awesome!

It is! My Combeferre is a combination of a young Ford Madox Brown and a young, slimmer Schubert!

Oh, come on--surely you know that sobriety and art don't mix. You just keep doing it your way.

BTW, what kind of paints are these? Acrylics? It turned out great!

Thank you! Glad you like it - yup, it's acrylics and watercolour pencil. I find it's a fine balance when it comes to keeping the alcohol level topped up before Inspiring turns into "OMSB...why did I think that looked *good* last night? It's bloody awful by the cold light of day!"

It looks almost exactly like my Combeferre... or at least, what my Combeferre would look like if I could draw. (COLIN FIRTH. P & P)

SO PRETTY...

Bless Combeferre...I've been told I draw him like Maturin (not a series of books I've read).

Hmm, I haven't read it either. But he's very good-looking, at any rate.

I like how subtle the painting is. And it IS painting! I alawys admired people who paint instead of drawing.

I'm trying to convince myself it's a patient but slightly irritated look because he's had his head bent over his books all night, has been ruffling his hands absentmindedly through his hair, and Courfeyrac has just bounced in and pushed everything off the table.

Instead, all I can think of is "I'm too sexy for my cravat, too sexy for my cravat, what d'ya think about that?"

He looks very wise, very noble here, even with the sultry pout. XD

I especially like his collar.
