More expansion of my headcanon with a fourth installment--Just when you thought I couldn't make him any eviler. Ha. You hate him yet?Mature for implied genocide.
DISCLAIMER:
My ideas for the alicorns are probably different from most people's... A lot in the fandom view them as gods/goddesses.
I do not.
Instead, I see them as an ancient ascended race. By "ascended" I basically mean that they're "enlightened". (If you watch Stargate, then yeah, a lot like their Ancients). And they are not immortal, they simply reach a point and stop aging ("Man From Earth" concept, because I'm in love with that movie). Earth, pegasi, and unicorn ponies are descendants of the alicorns...
That's just my idea, and it's the idea that this comic is referencing.

I never thought of the alicorns as gods either; that would imply omniscience for starters. And every alicorn shown on the show has fallibilities. It makes them accessible. They're clearly ponies like every other character, they just have a little extra. I like to compare them to Solomon; wise, ancient and benevolent, but not perfect nor gods.

Nah, I wouldn't compare them to the Ancients. I would never compare anyone competent to those idiots. I mean, come on- they had millions of years to grow and develop and how in the name of all that is sane did they not cover the observable universe in Dyson Spheres? Oh, right, they kept getting killed- by, let's see:
1) An experiment gone horribly wrong, because apparently they've never heard of maybe INSTALLING A KILLSWITCH in your creation that it can't possibly get rid of because it's something required to function. [PEGASUS REPLICATORS]
2) A species, born maybe a handful of years before the war started, that for some reason required the worst possible food source- sentient beings. And, just to make it better- they HAD a weapon that could win the war. Did they use it? No, it made gates explode. But they could have shut down the network- hell, one Goa'uld was able to do that, how the hell could its creators not do the same! [THE WRAITH]
3) Dumbest of all- a naturally occuring disease. They had millions and millions of years to perfect their processes for wiping out diseases, genuinely functional nanotech that they could make do what they wanted, and they STILL couldn't beat one little disease? And yes, it was naturally occuring- which is sad, because if it were a bioweapon that might make SENSE. It might even explain What Happend To The Furlings, if they were the ones who did it and got genocided in return. [THE UNNAMED DISEASE THAT MADE THEM LEAVE THE MILKY WAY]

So, just out of curiosity, what about Discord's race? Draconequus's? Is Discord himself part of another ancient race, or was he simply the by-product of some dark sorcerror's insane experiments?

It wasn't a relevant detail to this short story.
...And I think it's worth mentioning that I made this comic during the week between the first and second parts of "The Return of Harmony". I didn't want to make too many assumptions/predictions (about the character) at the risk of them being completely deconstructed once the second episode aired.

There needs to be a few more draconeqi (as far as I can tell, plural of draconequus) that appear in the show. There should be at least one that's similar to Discord, but not evil.

This outlook on discord is amazing. I think its so true why he's hateful and bitter. I hold no contempt to Celestia for what she did, because its her life and her choice but you can never really say somepony is heartless, because they may have had theirs cut out. Discord is like this for a reason and even though he is mostly at fault you cannot condemn him into being a complete monster for it was chance that made him like this.

I always saw Alicorns as elf-like beings. They don't age, but are as mortal as any other race (by which I mean they can be killed). When people say "Immortal" I think they cant die period. People just get the definitions mixed up I guess.

I really love that image you paint when Discord says "Famine Drought Disease". That he's fighting them but then just takes the water, kills the crops and leaves them to disease.
The battle would just become a waiting game for Discord.
