Description No longer blue of course. In the late 1960s they were painted in this rather anaemic grey livery with blue window panels. However, when they were first introduced in 1960, it was in full Nanking Blue livery with Pullman crests everywhere and they were regarded as the last word in luxury. The initial service was between London St Pancras and Manchester Central ('The Midland Pullman') followed by their introduction on British Railways Western Region, becoming 'The Bristol Pullman', The Birmingham Pullman' and 'The South Wales Pullman'. When the Western Region Pullmans were out of action, their duties were covered by older wooden-bodied, loco-hauled Pullmans, known as the 'Wells Fargo Set'.

The first bastardisation of the original livery came in 1966 with the application of wrap-round yellow warning panels at each end, followed by the grey livery seen here. Sadly, the continental-type Schlieran bogies gave a poor ride on British track and this undoubtedly contributed to the Pullmans' demise in early May 1973. I remember seeing the midday departure of 'The South Wales Pullman' from Cardiff General Station on February 5, 1973, and three months later they were gone.

It was on a trip to Didcot that I just caught one of the retired units parked at Swindon on November 18, 1973. Our train was doing 75 mph and rocking and rolling so my little Konica C35 fixed-focus camera did its best. Probably of just as much interest is the late lamented Swindon works behind the Pullman, which is parked with an inspection saloon.

These diesel units were powered by NBL / MAN V12 supercharged engines with traction motors supplying power to the wheels. They are seen as the forerunners to the highly successful Inter City 125 HSTs.

Very good, especially considering the circumstances under which the shot was taken.

I do regret that I didn't take far more pictures of the contemporary rail scene back in the 70s and 80s.  Unfortunately, at the time most of what was running was just ordinary, and there every day.

Until the day it wasn't.

I have been caught myself so much in the same way - particularly with my photography of ships. I have just missed one that has paid off and I had previously had a number of chances to photograph it. Thanks for faving and for the kind comment.

I've seen Triang models of it in this livery, and it doesn't necessarily look bad, although nothing compared to the Nanking Blue with the cream/off white window surrounds.

Yeah I have got a couple of the old Triang end cars in blue but I wish Bachmann would bring it out in the grey as I remember seeing it.

Never would have guessed the 75mph fixed focus issue, great capture!

It is a shame that the Midland/Blue Pullman did not get preserved...

Yes sadly it was before diesel preservation really got going. People were more interested in emptying Barry Scrapyard of steam. Thanks for faving it.

My pleasure! Maybe we may see a "new-build" of the Midland Pullman in the future since a new-build of LMS 10000 is under-construction right now.

I didn't know they are doing 10000. That will be great.

I read about it in "The Railway Magazine." They are using the frame and some other parts of a Class 58 for this project, and have a number of parts and even a motor like the one used on 10000. Here is a link to the project's website (although it has not been updated too recently by the looks of it...)

Same here. We often hear about the new-build steam projects, but there are a couple projects involving diesel traction. In fact, there is even a BR diesel brake tender "new-build" project wrapping up at the Great Central Railway!

I think there is also a 'Baby Deltic' project somewhere. I keep wondering what will happen to all these steam new-builds when Network Rail finally pulls the plug on main line steam - as I'm sure will happen eventually.

It will probably be a long time until that will happen though. You are correct about the Baby Deltic project; it is being carried out at Barrow Hill roundhouse.

Thanks for the link - very interesting to see the progress. It is actually beginning to look like a Baby Deltic.

Agreed. It appears that it is being built using a Class 37 as a base for the engine, and modifying the locomotive to become more like a Baby Deltic.

Ah well they are certainly coming along with it. More so than the Class 22 group but I hope they will progress.

I hope that there will be some more new-build projects here in the US as there are in the UK. There have not been many major new-build projects here except the completion of a replica of a Central Pacific 4-4-0 and the passenger car that hauled Abraham Lincoln's body after he was assassinated.

You heard correctly. It is the only major new-build project taking place here in the US right now.

Oh wow! I know that you will at least be able to witness the return of the Union Pacific "Big Boy" 4014 within a few years, making it the largest operational steam engine in the world.

Same here! I hope to also see Chesapeake and Ohio #1309 once it is restored to operation at the Western Maryland Scenic Railway in Cumberland, Maryland. Until the Big Boy is restored, #1309 will be the world's largest operating steam engine.
