Makes me wonder why the Midland didn't pull their finger out and build bigger locos when they obviously could do so.
Love the 7Fs that they did. The one Achilles Heel was the axleboxes!
Not a strong point for Derby

Spot on mate! Same with the LMS Garratts. Beyer Peacock were told they had to follow Midland standards for the axleboxes and the same problems became evident.

Too true. The 7Fs didn't suffer too badly but that was due to the slower speeds on the S&D.
Midland Railway should have done better in some respect. Still made some lovely locos mind you.

Yes they did Ben. I regret not having seen a 2P as well.

The 2P class were one of the few classes that were popular over the S&D that had six foot wheels. We're deemed ideal for local traffic and also seen double heading many of the heavier expresses, sometimes all the way to Bournemouth. Then most trains had the pilot loco removed at Evercreech as the worst of the gradients had been done.
Pity none have survived.

Well I don't know if Bachmann did a model in blue but certainly 53808 on the West Somerset ran in blue as 88 until her latest overhaul.

7Fs are great locos, very nicely proportioned.
