With the limited turning facilities currently available on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, we photographers have to accept that a certain number of 'tender-first' pictures are necessary. However, I have kept these to a minimum. I am sure that, as the years go by, the railway will develop in this regard.

I took this shot to show the approach, from the south, to the recently reconstructed Broadway station, a superb recreation in which even the canopy steelwork was constructed in the railway's own workshops. I have called this picture 'Phoenixes' (I checked the plural noun) because here there are two masterpieces, both risen from the dead, a locomotive and a whole railway station.

'Merchant Navy' pacific No. 35006 Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co. (ex-Barry Scrapyard, returned to steam 2015) arrives at Broadway (station demolished 1963, rebuild nearing completion 2021) on May 31, 2021, my birthday. The signal box has also been rebuilt, something we could hardly have imagined all those years ago.

This is the 11.00 from Cheltenham Racecourse, the stock of which will form the 12.09 return service from Broadway.
