We have one at the Kansas City fairgrounds, but it's turned into a fantasy festival and it's just a bunch of quacks and fanatics now, so I don't go anymore.
All the fun annual actor travelers were severely limited in their acts when KC's new Ren Fest president put down some new rules. He thought many of their acts were offensive or unfit for family viewing. So most of the fun ones don't come to the KC fair anymore.

CPJPhoto In reply to RainyDayFun [2011-03-05 02:06:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh! What a shame... I'm really sorry to hear that. Leave it to the few to make rules for the many and ruin the fun there used to be had. Well, here's to a new regime with better insight to what the people really want, and here's to parents who teach their kids properly about life and all there is in it.

RainyDayFun In reply to CPJPhoto [2011-03-05 03:15:56 +0000 UTC]

YES!

I went to a Ren Fest in Oklahoma a few years ago with my husband. It was much smaller than the huge KC one, but all the fun actors were there that don't perform at KC anymore! I was really happy to see that it was only KC that ruined it.
KC now has stupid-looking fairies running around the entire park, Dungeons and Dragons FANATICS who are dressed like their humanoid characters, and the entire nobility dresses in psychedelic and neon colors. I can't stand it. Glad that crap hasn't happened at the other fairs....

LOL!
Yeah, I've seen the same in places with "inferior" fairs. I love going to those where people take their roll playing "seriously" and have a great time in period costuming and persona.

RainyDayFun In reply to CPJPhoto [2011-03-06 05:16:00 +0000 UTC]

The role playing can be fun, but I've tried to talk to fair goers who just won't break out of character and it can be annoying, especially when you try to ask a question that they refuse to answer seriously.

I asked a fair guest where she got her elf ears once, because I'd like to buy some too. She kept saying she inherited them from her mother and acted confused when I seriously tried to get her to tell me where she bought them. I love D&D myself, but it remains a game for me. Some people take it way too seriously and they ruin it for me.

the light...the way it defines...and the details are quite stunning...if I had one wish it would be that you had includes all of his feet...it's nit-picking I know and hardly worth mentioning...but it is kind of funny that off all the things I could have wished to see it's his feet isn't it? ;o)

CPJPhoto In reply to rickster155 [2010-07-29 00:38:08 +0000 UTC]

Not at all! It's a good point. I left his feet out (for the most part) for dramatic effect and a little for a play on the title... But I appreciate you pointing out your likes and dislikes of the piece...!!

rickster155 In reply to CPJPhoto [2010-07-29 00:50:58 +0000 UTC]

There is NOTHING to dislike in the photo at all...really...it's an amazing image with or without the feet. And I see your point about the title and that does make a difference in how I look at the image.

CPJPhoto In reply to rickster155 [2010-07-29 04:37:51 +0000 UTC]

I was told by a writer on here that my titles should relay something about the image and allow the viewer to get a 'feeling' for the image through its name. I took that to heart and started really paying attention to the images I create, and the titles I give them - which, admittedly, gives an image a personality that would be much different if the title were, say: "Poopy noodle pizza face"

So, I'm doing what I feel is right by both the images I hang in my gallery, and the titles they bear.

Again, as always, thanks for your support, Rick!

rickster155 In reply to CPJPhoto [2010-07-29 05:01:51 +0000 UTC]

that's good advice...but from my point of view...even if you did call a work "Poopy noodle pizza face" it wouldn't alter the fact that you create images that speak volumes...with or without words your images are so compelling...so masterfully executed...so moving...they need no explanation...they need only be experienced with the heart and mind and soul.

CPJPhoto In reply to rickster155 [2010-07-29 17:31:56 +0000 UTC]

AHAHAHA! Thank you, Rick. I'm *very* sure that if I called an image something crazy I wouldn't hear the end of it. No matter how amazing the capture is, if it has a title flaw, it will be criticized. I get criticized here and there from very well-meaning people. Their work on here may be non-existant, but they mean well and I appreciate their input. I'm sure that if the Mona Lisa was called Girly Head with Hair it would not be taken as seriously, nor be as famous - the name detracts from the *perception* of the image. Words have a lot of power in and of themselves. They give whatever they describe not only meaning, but purpose and personality. They define an image and form a structure of personal memories within the viewer that transcends the image itself. I wish I could just leave some images "untitled," but that's not allowed. So, I (and I'm sure quite a few others on here) title their work as befitting the image as possible - sometimes adding a twist of irony, or a sense of the personal feelings they had for the piece they created.

rickster155 In reply to CPJPhoto [2010-07-29 17:48:35 +0000 UTC]

Personally I think 'Untitled" is a perfectly good title...and apropriate for any number of reasons. I don't think I could conceive of an instance where I would criticize anyone's choice of title...that is the domain of the artist...if I find it means something different to me that in no way gives me the right to say Hey...change this. We all respond based on our own experience...I may have shared similar ones to you or someone else...but not the same experience or in the same way...what I call it may not be what you would. Your work speaks beyond words...they may give a context to the image...but the image itself always move me on level that transcend the definable. I can't tell you the number of times I've looked at something you've shown here and just sat...silent...stunned...struggling to comprehend the mind and the talent that could conceive the image before me.

CPJPhoto In reply to rickster155 [2010-07-29 18:50:25 +0000 UTC]

Sadly, only one title can be given per image - so once "Untitled" is used, it can't be used again in that gallery. So - the process of imagining a title that is appropriate begins, and sometimes ends, with something less than ideal. There are plenty who could give a rat's ass what they call their pieces, and are 'avant-garde' in that respect; rebels, non-conformists, and antiestablishmentarians. That's cool for them, and I can appreciate their stance - if they are consistent with that stance. I'm still looking for my place in this world of photography. I've yet to find it. I want to go beyond what I do and what I create to render *masterpieces.* I want to have viewers emote by what they see in my imagery. I have barriers to tear down - I have filters to rip apart - I have obstacles to overcome.
