Nice hat, and love how you did the lighting. The background reminds me of early surrealist films.

Detectives are sexy, and you've shown that well, I'm so curious as to what this fella really looks like, the background is fine to me, very artsy.

sharpen the bg just a bit with detail and lighten the street light that's close to the detective and i think the bg will look good.

i cant give you any advice on the background, but i love how that guy's face is obscured, but you still have the shading on the hat and the very tiny bit of his face. very cool effect.

Love it, love it, love it. Heh, how's that for advanced critique? Honestly, though, it's poifect as it is, and the sketchy background just adds to the cinematic look of the thing.
Man, they don't do films and male headware like they used to, do they? Bring back the fedora, I say. If fellas think they can look sharp in pastel-coloured t-shirts, pre-faded designer jeans and trucker caps they've got another think coming

Pfft, meant to say headwear. Headware does conjure up some curious images though. Aight, I'll stop cluttering up your page now.

Awesome forground! That is really effective. Dark and menacing.
For the background I think it could benifit from more definition and sharpness. Also a bit more detail to contrast the dark solid figure before us. What you could do is draw it out in full detail and then soften it with a rubby stick or soft paper towel after to blur it slightly. I think that might fix what you dont like about the background.
Really effective image, It caught my eye in your gallery.

What you should do is take this image and run it through Photoshop to clean it up. I doubt the white splotches were intentional, and they really drag the image down. The entire concept looks amazing in my mind when I see what could have been done to edit the drawing and make it much more clear.
If you need help with it, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Well I did darken it in photoshop but you can only darken it so much before it makes the whole thing look weird. What would you suggest I do in photoshop? I'm a relative novice so you'll probably have to spell it out.

Paint over your pencil lines with a black brush in a new layer, or draw over them with the pen tool and use the resulting shapes to fill in the dark areas. Basically just draw over the entire image digitally and enhance it that way.

I feel this is the best in ur gallery so far. First thing that catches my eye instantly is the mysterious figure and that's the way it shud be since he's the main subject here. Reflection of light on his fedora, face & coat is brilliant! The background bothers me a lil too, otherwise it's a great piece. Love the grainy look (don't lose that quality cuz it's charming), film noir indeed!

I love the way this one feels. The instant I look at it my eyes are drawn to where the light hits the brim of the hat and the hat itself. The detail there is stunning. The curve if his collar is beautiful, too. The whole silhouette idea behind this is just soooo strong and evocative... I love it. I don't mind the blurry background at all - if you hadn't have said anything I would have thought it was intentional, so we really know that this man in the foreground is what we should be paying attention to.
