History

Jalen was born into a life of salt, residing to this day in Eerie Lake in the sanctuary. His fascination with the land dwellers as a child influenced him to come out of his watery home and into the town. Seeing everything the surface had to offer was much better than the lake. The fashion, food and community was exciting and he wanted desperately to be a part of it. It was hard to be on land for too long, but his experience made it worth it. Eventually he found a way to make money by selling his hair to an undisclosed food service. Since he kept himself clean and healthy, and since it grew rather quickly, they offered him a decent pay out for each 'donation', so long as he also agreed not to tell anyone where they sourced their seaweed from. He also developed a bad habit of pick pocketing coins from people and water fountains.

A small gang of unruly monsters is who he happened to initially acquaint himself with, unfortunately. Hence his discovery of the shady way to make money. The group liked to pester other monsters who stumbled into their territory and went around causing a few other small problems. As a bit of a smooth talker, he could usually get the group out of too much trouble, so they liked having him around. Jalen wasn't much for crime, but they never asked him to do anything but negotiate with authorities, so he didn't mind much. He figured what they did was their business, but he was unaware that he was starting to develop a reputation.

Jalen is seen as a somewhat shady person due to the crowd he can often be found with, and while that may or may not be true, he is outwardly kind to most anyone. Though he does enjoy teasing people and scaring them if given the chance, it's all in good fun. Now aware of his bad rap, he's focused on developing and maintaining friendships with other monsters.

Jalen spends most of his time in the water so he's actually in great physical shape. He likes fashion, but doesn't wear clothes when in the lake. When he exits the water, he wears a wet suit to keep his skin hydrated while he walks around.

His kelp hair grows very quickly in the most ideal circumstances, but since he's taken refuge in Eerie lake rather than the ocean, temperature, light and nutrient levels keep the growth rate around three to five inches per day.

He smokes as a result of peer pressure, and while he'll admit it's a bad habit, he can't seem to kick it. He has a hard time lighting his own cigarettes, so he'll usually ask for help.
