Description Dragonfly, dragonfly,
Please don't pass me by
Wait with me a little while
Whilst I look, wonder and smile ~ Rani Turton

I think this may be the Broad Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea). It’s saturated with colour, which spills over to the wings, where the veins near the body are like red netting. The amber pterostygma at the tips are like small stained glass windows. I'd be interested if anyone can confirm or correct this identification.

Thank you - I really have no idea about its name. I just love its beauty! It was originally photographed in Spain.

Agreed but check out my current submission of a common blue damselfly - it could be even more beautiful (?)

As previously suggested, I came across them totally unexpectedly. It was great fun trying to get close enough to take the shot without falling into the stream. A slightly more interesting background would have been perfect but that was not within my control. Glad you enjoyed it

in North America we call most of the red ones, the late summer meadowhawks." there are a lot of different red ones, different shades and tones. They are one of my faves.  I think it is near on impossible to make a perfect ID unless you are holding it. Unless you are an expert. I'm not.

You captured this one very well.

This one was a Spanish dragonfly. My previous experience was either blue or green, the pure red was a total surprise. I spent a few hours trying to identify it, as recorded in the description above, but whether I'm correct is open to correction.

I'm a dragonfly lover, as you can see So it doesn't take much to win me over, but you did a great job capturing this one.

Thank you - that is a very generous comment about a first attempt. I would really like to get a proper one flying but it seems impossible!

Well it was a great job. The focus is nice work!
I have tried a few times and it didn't work for me...if your camera has a 'sports' feature, maybe that would work. I have thought of it.

You were so lucky to capture it!

cricketumpire In reply to Sun-Bliss [2013-09-22 22:06:53 +0000 UTC]

We suddenly spotted it simply because of its stunning colour. I'd never seen a pure red one before. Later there were three chasing each other but to photograph them in flight proved impossible!       I'll try again one day though

They are so incredibly delicate aren't they - and the little, amber "stained glass window" effects on the leading tips are stunningly beautiful in my opinion.

TheBlueDreamMaker In reply to cricketumpire [2013-09-17 19:02:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.Isn't it wierd that only batterflies and bugs have this type of wings?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cricketumpire In reply to TheBlueDreamMaker [2013-09-17 22:00:14 +0000 UTC]

I guess bigger animals such as birds need more substantial wings to support the body weight. The difference between hang gliders and jumbo jets perhaps!
