I still think this one looks like a Disney character from a plane version of "Cars" - a neat little sporty two seater!

i love dragonflies! they're so pretty! and i'm proud to say i saved one from drowning in a pool. his wings were stuck together from the water and so while he was sitting there drying off i gently dabbed at his wings until they separated -^_^- then he flew off...and i was like "he's ok! "

It's true, there are lots of shots on DA featuring dragons and damsels, but most of them I've seen are of a far poorer quality.

I wish I had a DSLR to shoot with, I know where on Anglesey there are lots of blue demoiselles flitting around.

These ones were taken in Spain, having found them by accident. I too know of some places at home in UK where there are dragonflies, so I must try again. You are right a D-SLR is probably necessary but I was surprised to get such good results even so.

Probably took an hour - my wife moaned she was left in the car on her own! The result you must judge for yourself but I enjoyed it!

Dragon flies start out life as naiads. They can live in the water up to five years. When they metamorphose they climb up a reed or another kind of emerging plant. They start to breath and their Larva skin falls off. Where as they start beating their wings and fly. They can fly up, down, or side to side. Once they leave the water they only live up to six months.

I don't know if it's cruel that once they emerge they die so quickly, or if it's a beautiful gift to know such freedom?

cricketumpire In reply to EyeGoCrazy [2013-09-18 06:49:34 +0000 UTC]

They do spend that six months as the "Ferrari of the insect world" though - a top speed of over thirty miles an hour for some species and distinctive colouration. Alternatively, this one looks like an "insect attack helicopter" character from a Disney/Pixar animated film, with army camouflage and the green flight helmet! Either way, they're flash little critters...

Now I'm wondering if this metamorphose is a mid life crisis And you are right his coloring does lend himself to an army pilot.

It certainly seems to fit the pattern. Boy grows, marries, has children, buys sports car in late middle age when he should know better, dies. We all go there

Not all. I've heard tales of legendary souls, who against all odds grow old with grace and dignity. I hear they live amongst unicorns and pixies in some hollow

You only just resisted typing "old" then didn't you EGC - and I've yet to meet a unicorn or pixie even if I have done the metamorphosis thing!
