Description My two fav representations of Jeanne D'Arc are both -not surprisingly- in Paris: a painting at Sacre Coeur and a statue at Notre Dame. During my last trip, a few weeks ago, I had the chance to sketch them both in my travel sketchbook. Stillman & Birn Gamma series notebook with S Pitt markers (black, sepia, sanguine) and Schminke watercolors.

These travel sketches amaze me. This one in particular resonates personally -- I was captivated by the same statue when I first visited Notre Dame a long time ago. Had the good fortune to meet her during an evening when the cathedral wasn't crowded the way it usually is. (If, as you point out, watching paintings can be exhausting, it's even more tiring when a thousand other people are trying to watch the same artwork!)

I have another favorite Joan statue in Paris: the golden equestrian one just outside the Louvre. The one atop the entrance to Sacre-Coeur never resonated with me as much. I don't recall the painting inside -- it's been twenty years since I was there -- so I will have to make a point of getting a good look when I go back!

Thank you again for sharing these wonderful drawings! They really capture the feel of the places I've been to, and they make me eager to visit the places I haven't seen yet.

I think I know which statue you are referring to, I also like that one a lot, it's pretty impressive. I didn't see it this time, though. I recommend the painting very much, too, I love the coloring and the art nouveau-like style. It's quite a contrast with the sobriety of Notre Dame statue.
Thanks for your support, I really love travel sketches, they make me live the experiences every time I go over an old notebook again

Awesome! Jeanne D'Arc is high on my list of historical figures about whom I should really learn more.

I've always been interested in Jeanne D'Arc since I was a kid. I don't know how many times I've gone to see this statue
